The song is part of the singer’s new album, out in August, and sees the American artist singing in Portuguese
Milton Nascimento released this Friday (21st) the song “Um Vento Passou (para Paul Simon)”, which is part of his next album, “Milton + Esperanza”, scheduled for August. The song is part of an album made in collaboration with American singer Esperanza Spalding and features Paul Simon singing in Portuguese.
History of the collaboration with Paul Simon
Augusto Nascimento, Milton’s son, revealed that the collaboration with Paul Simon began during the pandemic, when Milton emailed a melody for Simon to write the lyrics. Simon initially did not respond due to the hearing issues he was facing, but the collaboration resumed in 2022 when the artists met in New York.
On that occasion, while visiting director Spike Lee in a New York hotel, Milton received flowers from Paul Simon. “I thought he wouldn’t go, but he sent me his love,” Augusto said. However, Simon made a surprise appearance, reprising the collaboration, which was recorded last year. Milton also shared a photo of the meeting on Instagram (see below), and Simon mentioned the recording in a November interview.
Contribution by Márcio Borges
Augusto stated that although Esperanza Spalding wanted to invite a well-known lyricist, she insisted that Márcio Borges, Milton’s old partner, write the lyrics. “I stood my ground and said that only Márcio Borges could write the lyrics for a new composition by my father,” Augusto said. The text was approved by Simon, who recorded his part.
“A Wind Has Passed (for Paul Simon)” deals with themes such as friendship, the passage of time and memory.
It is worth mentioning that Milton Nascimento said goodbye to the stage in 2022, but did not retire from music.
