This is the second time this year that the roof of the building located at Travessa do Comércio, number 13, has collapsed. Another incident occurred in June this year and, earlier this month, Iphan informed the current owner.
The Institute has requested that the necessary repairs be made to remedy the structural risks of the property. The deadline within which the owner can present a defense or sign a commitment to assume responsibility for the damage is 15 days. Since the period has not yet expired, Iphan cannot notify you a second time.
If the owner of the property does not show up, the agency said he or she will have to pay a fine of 50% of the total value of the repairs for all the damages found. At the time of the first collapse, the Rio World Heritage Institute (IRPH) was also informed of the incident, as the house is located in a Cultural Environment Protection Area (APAC).
“The Institute emphasizes that the conservation of listed properties is the responsibility of the owners. It is up to the owner of the building to put forward restoration proposals, which must be analyzed and approved by the municipality’s technical team. Within its powers, Iphan carries out providing guidance on conservation measures to the owners and constant inspections of listed buildings, to avoid actions that could distort the buildings, as well as verifying the state of conservation of the properties,” Iphan informed.
