Brazilians manufactured cars in China long before the rest of the world

Did you know that it was the Brazilians – that’s right, the Brazilians – who taught the Chinese how to manufacture luxury cars for export? Well, this story seems crazy, but that’s exactly what happened, exactly 40 years ago, in 1984. We’re going to explain this story from the beginning, so follow along with us.

It was 1984 in Shanghai, when a group of 30 talented managers and engineers from Volkswagen do Brasil arrived in the city with the bold mission of sharing their knowledge and helping the Chinese build their first “foreign” car, the iconic Santana sedan.

Imagine the scene: a torrential storm hits the city, while the assembly line at the truck factory leaks everywhere. And it doesn’t stop there – the boilers dangerously close to the paint warehouse make the situation even more challenging. With no viable accommodation options, the team is forced to improvise and rent a modest house, since the local hotels leave much to be desired. A true adventure that would mark automotive history.

The Santana, initially underrated in its homeland, has reinvented itself in China, becoming a true icon of the local automotive industry. With more than four million units manufactured over 28 years, the Santana has earned its place as one of the most iconic models of Chinese motoring.

While Volkswagen do Brasil played a key role in introducing the Santana to China, American Motors Corporation stood out with its own extraordinary feat. In partnership with Beijing Automobile Works, they brought the legendary Jeep Cherokee XJ to the Chinese market in 1984.

The Jeep Cherokee, known for its robustness and versatility, has captivated enthusiasts around the world with its iconic design and extraordinary off-road performance. Reuniting the legacy of a renowned brand, the Cherokee XJ found fertile ground in China for its journey to success and recognition.

This unparalleled journey of learning, collaboration and innovation not only marked the history of the global automotive industry, but also demonstrated how initial challenges can turn into transformative opportunities for growth and development. The partnership between Brazilians, Germans and Chinese played a crucial role in this fascinating story that continues to inspire the automotive industry to this day.
