The limited circuit also hosts the award-winning Japanese drama “O Mal Não Existe”, the British comedy “Pequenas Cartas Obscenas” and the Brazilian animation “Teca e Tuti – Uma Noite na Biblioteca”
The release of “Deadpool and Wolverine” monopolizes this Thursday (25/7) the Brazilian cinemas in search of box office records, which in 2024 belong to an animated film for children, “Inside Out 2”, still in programming and leader of the most viewed films five weekends ago. With gigantic pre-sales, the debut should give historic numbers and change the top of the ranking.
Not wanting to get into this fight, the distributors scheduled the other titles for the limited circuit. The highlights are acclaimed and award-winning films: the Japanese drama “O Mal Não Exist”, the British comedy “Pequenas Cartas Obscenas” and the Brazilian animation “Teca e Tuti – Uma Noite na Biblioteca”. DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE
Marvel’s only release in 2024, the long-awaited meeting of the heroes played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman has been considered the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU, the Avengers universe, which has generated superlative expectations among fanboys. However, although the plot is part of the current phase of the MCU multiverse and the basic premise for the team is a mission of Deadpool (Reynolds) through parallel realities, the film is not the big crossover that fans expect, but a tribute and farewell to the Marvel universe of 20th Century Fox, which ends in a plot hole, a landfill where much of the action takes place.
To prevent his world from being erased by the Time Variance Authority (TVA) of the “Loki” series, Deadpool tries to find an alternate version of Wolverine (Jackman) to take the place left by the deceased Logan, who served as an anchor. to that reality. He finds himself with a reluctant and very nervous variant of the hero, in an interaction marked by numerous fights and comic moments.
The script, written by director Shawn Levy (“The Adam Project”) and Reynolds along with the writers of the two previous films, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, takes the heroes through different realities of the multiverse, including variations of Wolverine at different stages of his life, as well as versions of Deadpool who further explore his chaotic and unpredictable humor. They also have to deal with numerous special appearances, most notably when they end up at the TVA landfill, home to characters from old 20th Century Fox films and the villain Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin, “The Crown”). Most of the guests have already been revealed in the trailers, but there are plenty more to come.
A giant Easter egg in the form of a movie, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is the pinnacle of Marvel cinematic style (jokes, brawls, and fan service) combined with the sweary, gory humor of previous “Deadpool” productions.
EVIL DOES NOT EXIST
The new drama from Japanese director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, known for his work on the acclaimed “Drive My Car” (Oscar for Best International Film), is set in a small rural village where Takumi and his daughter Hana live a modest life in harmony with nature, collecting water, wood and wild wasabi for a local restaurant. This daily life is affected when the residents discover an agency’s plan to build a luxury “glamping” (glamorous camping) site in the region. With the ecological and social balance threatened, a conflict between community values and corporate interests begins.
The film criticizes the impact of economic development on traditional communities and the environment and won the Critics’ Award and the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival, as well as the Best Film trophy at the London Film Festival.
SMALL OBSCENE LETTERS
The British crime comedy is based on a true story that took place in 1920s Littlehampton, England, when the town’s residents began receiving anonymous letters filled with swear words. The plot focuses on Edith Swan (played by Olivia Colman), a conservative woman who receives many of these letters, and Rose Gooding (played by Jessie Buckley), a foul-mouthed Irish immigrant who is accused of writing the letters. The story takes a hilarious turn when the police and the town’s women begin to investigate the true origin of the letters.
The plot unmasks the prejudices of the time and reveals the dark secrets of the community, presenting themes of discrimination and injustice, but with a light and humorous tone. Thea Sharrock’s film (“The Great Ivan”) was released at the last Toronto Film Festival, where it received positive reviews (80% on Rotten Tomatoes), especially for the performances of Colman and Buckley, who had already worked together in “The Lost Daughter”. “. (2021), without however acting opposite each other, as they played the same character at different times.
TECA AND TUTI – A NIGHT IN THE LIBRARY
The Brazilian animation tells the story of Teca, a small moth who lives with her family and her pet mite Tuti, in a sewing box. Their main entertainment is eating paper. However, Teca’s life changes when she learns to read and realizes that books should not be eaten, as they contain fascinating stories. The plot follows the adventure of Teca and Tuti as they explore a library, trying to find the most important story of their lives. The animation combines live action, conventional 2D animation and stop-motion techniques to convey a message that celebrates the importance of books and reading.
Directed by Tiago MA Lima, Eduardo Perdido and Diego M. Doimo, the film took 20 years to produce since its first attempt, the short film “A Traça Teca” (2003), and was awarded as best children’s feature film of 2024 at the International Children’s Film Festival (FICI), in Rio de Janeiro.
FAUSTO FAWCETT IN THE LEAD
Fausto Fawcett, author of the hits “Kátia Flávia, a Godiva do Irajá” and “Rio 40 Graus”, reveals his daily life in Copacabana in Victor Lopes’ documentary (“Betinho – A Esperança Equilibrista”), which explores the creative universe of the singer, composer, poet and writer. The production investigates the narrative, philosophical and temporal boundaries of his work, highlighting his creative and transgressive approach. CONGRATULATIONS
The documentary investigates the reasons why people decide to take vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and stability in the 21st century. The film by Ângela Patrícia Reiniger (“Three Blood Brothers”) explores life in monasteries in the big cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, highlighting the permanent commitment of these individuals in contrast to the contemporary search for ephemeral pleasures and status, offering a glimpse of a reality that is not accessible and considered unusual in modern societies.
