The band was sued by a record company early in their career
Jared Leto revealed that the Thirty Seconds To Marsband formed with his brother Shannonfaced some financial problems at the beginning of his career.
After the release of the debut album, A Beautiful Lie (2005), the group gained notoriety — and debt. “We sold millions of copies and then found out that, not only had we not received a single cent, but we were millions of dollars in debt,” he said. “We fought. They sued us for $30 million for breach of contract and then we made a movie about it. Anyway, we got through this crazy time in our lives and it’s good to be on the other side,” he continued, citing the film. Artifact (2012).
The documentary shows the battle between the Thirty Seconds To Mars and EMI began in 2008, when the company sued the musicians for not releasing a third album and the two parties disputed royalties. They reached a settlement, and the band signed with Virgin Records.
Leto He also stressed that it is difficult to make money as a musician due to various cost factors. “You make money on the road, and nowadays it is very difficult because of inflation,” he said. “I would do it for free. It is a beautiful thing to be out there.”
