Singer claims he accepted lucrative offer for world tour, but guitarist ignored invitation
Morrissey, former lead singer of The Smiths, recently stated on his official website that he has accepted a “lucrative” offer to reunite the iconic British band in 2025. According to the singer, the proposal was made by entertainment company AEG in June 2024. However, Johnny Marr, the band’s former guitarist, reportedly ignored the invitation, thwarting plans for a possible world tour.
The differences persist
The Smiths split in 1987, largely due to artistic differences between Morrissey and Marr. Since then, both have pursued solo careers, with Morrissey recently playing a nearly sold-out US tour. Marr, in turn, continues to tour as a special guest with New Order. Morrissey teased the situation on his website: “Morrissey to play a nearly sold-out US tour in November. Marr continues to tour as a special guest with New Order.”
Johnny Marr’s Reactions
On Monday (26/8), Johnny Marr subtly responded to speculation about a possible Smiths reunion. In response to a post on X (formerly Twitter) mentioning the Oasis band reunion, Marr responded with an image of politician Nigel Farage. The choice of photo is significant, as Farage, who is publicly supported by Morrissey, is a controversial figure on the British far right, symbolising the political differences between the two musicians.
