Juvi Chagas talks about second album, inspirations and content creation; see

The singer, songwriter and content creator spoke about her career in music and the release of her second album, Músicas pra Ex, Vol. 2

Juvi Chagas became known on the internet for her content production. However, she is also an artist. She sings and composes and leads the band Juvi Chagas. In 2022 he released his first album, Songs for Exes, Vol. 1: Just Trigger Fuck.

This year, the project gains an expansion with Songs for Ex Vol. 2: 99% Boladona 1% Xonadona (2024). The idea of separating the project into volumes came as a reference to the musical collections common in the 2000s, says the artist in conversation with Rolling Stone Brasil.

“I thought it was interesting, I had seen other artists doing something similar and I thought: ‘why not?’ That’s when the idea of separating them into volumes came up.” The compositions were made separately. Juvi says that initially they were more sad and emotional.

Things change when the track “Man’s Butt” from a conversation she had with her brother. “I really like this sound, I’ve never done something like this more electronic, mixing some more typically Brazilian rhythms,” she explains. The track was the starting point for the first volume, still during the pandemic.

The composer says that her songs are born, most of the time, from the instrumental part. “Cheque especial” is the exception, the lyrics came first during a trip to Ireland. “The instrumental tells me what I’m going to say there.”

Irreverent names

Middle Stick Troop” and “Male Breasts” are some of the names of the tracks on Vol. 2. Juvi says he has a list of names for the songs even before they are written. “I have a notebook just with song title ideas.”

During the interview, she also reveals the name of a track that has not yet been released: “Web Sex, The New Fashion,” and warns: “This one’s hot.” While the names have a comic tone, the songs go deeper.

I use this form to talk about a subtext that really are discussions that appear in friendship circles and conversations with my brother, with my friends.

The new track, for example, came from a conversation that took place during a rehearsal, where they talked about the uberization of things and “how everything can be outsourced.” The song was the first to emerge with the band that takes the project to the stage.

Content creator

Despite working in music, it was creating content for social media that gave Juvi greatest projection on the internet to date. The artist, however, understands that the two careers communicate because they are based on the same pillar of artistic production.

“Saying the most random and crazy things that people can understand,” she explains. This applies to the songs and also to the Top 5, a chart she created for social media. “I see it as an artistic process too.”

She also talks about the importance of her responsibility to the public. “If this is going to be life, then let it be life and let’s talk about the important things.” Juvi also spoke some time ago at TEDx in Blumenau.

At the event, she spoke about non-binary issues, a topic she has been discussing more frequently and intends to talk about even more. “It is important to have quality content on this topic in Portuguese.”

Whether in music, lectures or social media, Juvi is a name to keep an eye on. The artist has expressed a desire to do a live version with the best tracks from each volume of Songs for Ex and now, with a band she is very proud of, it is only a matter of time before this and other projects come to fruition.
