Female programming fills Rock in Rio with loyal fans of pop divas

This Friday 19th the festival welcomed names like Katy Perry and Karol G

If girls just want to have fun, as Cyndi Lauper sings in one of her greatest hits, the goal has been achieved this Friday the 19th. With a 100% female program, Dia Delas, at Rock in Rio 2024, has attracted attention as the most. an edition so far crowded and characterized by exciting shows full of surprises.

The passionate tone that would continue throughout the night, with fans belting out their favorite artists’ hits, was evident in the early afternoon. At 2 p.m., when the general gates were officially opened at Cidade do Rock, in the West Zone of the capital Rio de Janeiro, many were racing to grab the best spot on the World Championship stage grid under a 31°C sun. From that moment on, the last attraction of the night would appear just over 10 hours later, at 12:10 a.m.

The festival’s seven stages featured performances by women such as Luedji Luna, Cynthia Luz, Pocah and Iza, eight months pregnant, who got emotional talking about the pregnancy of Nala, her first daughter. “In 2022 I brought my mother and now I am the mother. My belly is like a bowling ball, but everything is fine, right, Rock in Rio?” the singer joked during her show on the Sunset stage. In 2022, Iza performed on the festival’s Mundo stage.

She also brought Ivete Sangalo to sing the hit “Meu talismã”. The Bahian also surprised Iza by appearing in a jacket embroidered with Nala’s name. “It’s just for her to remember that her aunt here already loves her very much,” she said.

Long before participating in Iza’s show, Ivete had already transformed Cidade do Rock into a carnival with her performance. The artist opened the proceedings on the main stage with a well-choreographed ballet, hits from other carnivals and made the Rock in Rio audience jump with her axé.

Veveta, as she is affectionately known to fans, was also applauded when she was hoisted onto a structure during the performance of the song “Pequena Eva,” in a Pink-like moment at Rock in Rio in 2019. Despite the surprise, Ivete’s show was not exactly new to those who had already seen the artist on stage, but it was enough to thrill her once again. As they jumped in 31°C temperatures, the audience near the fence received ice water in sealed plastic cups provided by the event organizers.

On the day that North American Katy Perry headlined, anyone who looked around the stage at Mundo saw countless people wearing T-shirts with Ivete Sangalo’s face or lyrics from songs like “Macetando”. The impression, in fact, was that there was no unanimity among the audience, mostly male. If the day before it had been T-shirts honoring the singer Ed Sheeran that dominated the fans’ choice, on Friday, in the same space, different groups found themselves, equally excited. Ivete Sangalo’s “zamuris”, Katy Perry’s “katycats” and even the “bichotas”, as the Colombian fans of Karol G are called.

The person who brought all these “classes” together was singer Cyndi Lauper. In her first appearance at an edition of Rock in Rio, the 71-year-old artist had everyone singing hits like “Girls just wish have fun” and “Time after time.” In “True Colors” you could see a sea of smartphones ready to film the moment.

What happened right after his show was different from what had happened during every day of the festival. This is because, on the other nights, the audience was divided between the shows on the Sunset and Mundo stages. As soon as a show on the main stage ended, you could see a huge group of people heading towards the secondary stage.

On the night of pop divas, there were no fans willing to give up the space closest to the stage to watch other performances. Not even singer Tyla, owner of the TikToker hit “Water,” made the audience want to leave the railing of the Mundo stage to see her show at Sunset. Even so, Friday was the hardest day to calmly walk on the lawn. The space was already packed with a loyal audience, determined not to leave until the last song by headliner Katy Perry.

Just before her, on the stage of Mundo, Colombian Karol G took to the stage to entertain an audience that was not used to enjoying Latin rhythms. With eight nominations at the 2024 Latin Grammys, the singer is an absolute success in countries like Colombia, Mexico and Peru, but she really moved the Brazilian audience when she spoke in Portuguese, sang the funk remix “Tá Ok” and called drag queen Pabllo Vittar on stage to perform the song “Álibi”, with Sevdaliza and Yseult, her recording partners.

For those who enjoyed Karol G’s show near the stage, trying to position themselves a little further back to see Katy Perry became an almost impossible mission. This is because the crowding made it difficult to the point of almost preventing people from moving. When Katy Perry appeared on the screen, it was difficult to reach the Sunset stage, about 400 meters from where the North American was singing.

After the fireworks announced the end of Katy’s show to the sound of “Firework”, the audience remained at Cidade do Rock to enjoy Xuxa’s nostalgic performance in the Itaú space, announced the same day.

By the end of the day, the feeling was that Rock in Rio 2024 had started there, on its fifth day of attractions. The enthusiasm of a large audience and the performances on stage by pop divas made the 40th anniversary edition of Brazil’s biggest festival finally take on the “look” of a festival.
