Baz Luhrmann Reveals How Elvis Presley’s Music Transforms the Korean Pop Genre

Baz Luhrmann, biopic writer and director Elvis(2022), revealed how Elvis Presley has connections with K-Pop. The filmmaker spoke about the musical inspiration of Korean pop in the King of Rock in an interview with the South Korean television show MBC News.

The fact is that GI’s [americanos] brought rock n’ roll to Korea from the beginning and this mixed with local talent, used by many artists as an example.

This is not the first time that the director draws parallels between the career of Presley and the industry k-pop. In a separate press conference held with South Korean media, Luhrmann described Presley as the “first idol” of oriental musicians.

“The culture k-pop started with Elvis in the 1950s,” said Luhrmann, according to the The Korea Times. “He was the first idol. We become aware that business is important, but the soul of an artist is the most important thing.”

Also during the interview with the MBC News, Luhrmann revealed to be currently working with “K-pop icons” as a producer, for the release of new songs. The director did not reveal which artists he is working with or a release date for the collaboration.

There are speculations about Luhrmann possibly be working with BLACKPINK, after announcing the return of the hiatus, and the rapper G-Dragon, from the group Big Bang. The suspicion arose after G-Dragon show on his Instagram a meeting with the filmmaker.

The biopic follows the rise of Elvis Presley to fame and the singer’s complex relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parkerwho discovered it in 1955. The film features Austin Butler in the role of the King of Rock and Tom Hanks comg Parker.

In addition, cast has names such as Richard Roxburgh, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Luke Bracey, Dacre Montgomery, David Wenham, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Olivia DeJonge. Directed and written by Baz Luhrmann, the film was postponed a few times due to the covid-19 pandemic and is scheduled to premiere on July 14, 2022 in national cinemas. Check out the trailer:
