The track will be included on the band’s next album, “Songs of a Lost World”, due out in November this year
British band The Cure released their first new song in 16 years, “Alone,” this Thursday (9/26). The song is the first preview of the new album, “Songs of a Lost World”, which will be released in November.
The almost seven-minute melancholic song is the first single from the band’s 14th studio album, which has already presented other songs during the current tour. It is worth mentioning that “Alone” was also the opening song of each show.
In a statement, singer Robert Smith explained that there was some difficulty in preparing the new album, but that the composition of “Alone” was the group’s turning point. “It’s the track that unlocked the record; as soon as we recorded that song, I knew it was the opening song and I felt the whole album come into focus,” the artist explained.
“I had long struggled to find the right opening phrase for the right opening song, working with the simple idea of ’being alone’, always with the nagging feeling of already knowing what the opening phrase should be.”
It worked!
Smith also commented that when he finished recording the track, he immediately remembered the poem “Dregs” by Ernest Dowson. “It was at that moment that I knew the song – and the album – was real,” the singer said, reflecting on the new phase.
“Alone” features an opening instrumental that lasts over three minutes before Smith begins singing about transmutations. “This is the end of all the songs we sang / The fire turned to ash and the stars darkened with tears.”
Shortly thereafter, Smith continues to sing and reflect on “birds falling from our skies,” “love falling from our lives,” and a “broken-voiced lament to call us home.”
