As director, Le-Van Kiet and star / executive producer Joey King delivered a double whammy of action and humor with Princess, audience members will think of films that sound familiar. It’s no surprise to either King or Kiet, since they’ve heard theirs hulu movie compared to the tastes of die Hard, older boy Yes Lowering. Yet, they absolutely encourage these parallels, because the two collaborators have established these links themselves, as have few others.
Joey King and Le-Van Kiet’s reactions to these princess confrontations
Speaking with Joey King and Le-Van Kiet on behalf of the press day for PrincessThoughts were already circulating about the kind of movie this Hulu original seems to have been inspired by. Some might see this sort of thing as an indirect comment similar to “I was there / I did it”, but certainly not King. In fact, as he told Gossipify, those comparisons seemed natural:
I love all comparisons. People have many different things that they take advantage of. Some people said Kill Bill, some people say [Shrek’s] Princess Fiona. For me, the stuff that I came out of, I would always say The Raid. The Raid really inspired me to prepare this film. I think it’s just a very similar design, in terms of the structure of the film.
A person who makes his way through an evil tower with a bunch of obstacles to liven things up surely is lowering DNA. However, as promised Princess trailer there are also some die Hard also in the dough. Joey King certainly knew this, and even though he wasn’t mentioned, Le-Van Kiet definitely let it be known when he said the following:
Add some Die Hard too. A little bit of John McClane speaking for himself. This kind of thing.
If there was one thing that surprised Kiet Princess, is the fact that he has lost track of the fact that there were 12 fights which made up the journey of about an hour and a half. This fact further underscores how flexible the concept of writers Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton was. Fortunately, there was room for more movies to join in the fun, as Joey King released two more major titles that made The Princess what she is.

We have to think that she will not make it and we are afraid for her. So Atomic Blonde was the real inspiration for me, for that kind of feeling.
With all the work Joey King has put into what has been called “the stair sequence”, it could be said that it is her pride and joy as an actress and executive producer of Princess. This is also seen in The king’s tip for a Disney parks attraction that he would take this very scene and turn it into a thrill ride.
Dedication is another common thread running through Princess, while Le-Van Kiet matched Joey King in terms of required intensity. Approaching the project as an action geek who happens to be a director, Kiet led his team with this work ethic:
We really wanted it to work, because [Joey] I wanted it to work. We were also making it ourselves. We said to ourselves, ‘Listen guys, we’re fans of this too.’ We enter there like everyone else and like you. We checked out, but we also wanted to have a lot of fun. We didn’t want to be taken seriously, to the point of being criticized for historical facts and all. We said to ourselves, ‘Look, people will come here, right now, we’ll give them what they want in advance and explain to them later. And then hopefully they will accept it.
Princess it’s kind of a stew in that regard, because taking what fans want from the film and preparing it with things they never imagined they expected turned out to be a wise move. This is also why Le-Van Kiet saw in it an opportunity that he had to participate in.
Why the princess’s gender shift was so important to director Le-Van Kiet
Plan a trip like Princess it’s a great balancing act, especially with tone and action. Having the exciting mix of influences on the table only helps gauge this type of execution, and that’s what thrilled Le-Van Kiet. While continuing to discuss the unique nature of this film, Kiet also mentioned the two broad audiences who were the intended target audience:
This is really what attracted me to this project, the gender bending and the element of surprise. … I think it will thrill action fans as well as young women who want to see this kind of young princess be different.
Le-Van Kiet not only cited the best of action as an influence, but two other Disney fairy tales were invoked. Specifically, Rapunzel’s base material for Tangled up and Disney / Pixar Cheerfulness Both were introduced in the production notes by Kiet himself. Although both films were present in the mix, one has a more important influence than the other.
Cheerfulness rather, it is a clearly drawn parallel due to the fact that Joey King’s princess wants to learn how to fight and refuses to marry against her will. Hey, this is one of them. In fact, I like Brave much more. I didn’t think I was referring to anything, but it made sense in a kitchen fight. I heard about it from an action team member when we tested it and it worked perfectly in one take. He turns to me and says, “You can never go wrong with a frying pan in your face.” … Especially the way it’s done, he adds a more comical effect to the scene.
If this isn’t a free translation of “Pans!” Who knew ?! then I need remedial lessons at Disney. Whether conscious or unconscious, Disney princess or action hero, the influences they created Princess which helped propel this original film to air on what I consider to be a thrilling ride.
