After Chappell reveals problems with harassment and depression, Mariah talks about the difficulties of fame
In a recent interview, Mariah Carey commented on the difficulties faced by the singer Chappell Roan in his rapid rise to fame, highlighting that, in many moments, “it’s not fun”. Mariah’s statements came after Chappell publicly shared that she was diagnosed with severe depression, which she attributes to the pressures and challenges of becoming a public figure so quickly.
Chappell, who has been standing out in pop music, told The Guardian that simple tasks, like going to the park, have become complicated, as she needs “schedule security” and think about how to carry out everyday activities safely, to avoid the risk of being “stalked or harassed“.
The singer also compared fame to an “abusive ex-husband” in a recent interview with The Facecriticizing the normalization of extreme fan behavior such as online stalking and harassment. She added: “I didn’t know it would be this bad“.
Mariah Careywhen asked by Associated Press If he had any advice for young artists like Chappell, he reflected on his own experience with fame:
I’ve been through a lot, and it’s not fun, because you grow up thinking, ‘I want to be famous.’ For me, it’s always been, ‘I want to be a singer. I want to write songs’, but the desire to be famous was along with that.
I felt like I wasn’t good enough on my own because of the things I went through as a child. And that’s not a good way to feel.
