One of the most fundamental partnerships for Brazilian pop was that of the brothers Marina Lima AND Anthony Cicero. Full of gas, Events, Virgin AND To get started These were some of the songs they made together that became hits in Brazilian music.
Cicero, who died this Wednesday, aged 23, aged 79, was 10 years older than Marina. As the singer said in her book Way of being (Língua Geral), released in 2012, the age difference between them initially weighed on their relationship.
Marina explained that she was closer to Beto, her other brother, who also died. “When I was a child I only referred to Beto like this: ‘my brother Beto said,’ ‘my brother and I would like…’. It seemed like it was just the two of us. It’s just that Cicero and Ero were distant,” the singer wrote .
“We had no arguments, no interests, nothing in common. It was music that brought us together. And the possibility of earning a living came as a magical solution,” the singer continued.
She was the one who took the first step. In 1976 Marina collected a poem by Cicero entitled Soul Caiada and put it to music, without him knowing. Thus the partnership was born. The song was given to singer Maria Bethânia to record on the album The forbidden bird. However, the lyrics were vetoed by the military government’s censors because they had political connotations. The song would be released by Zizi Possi in 1979.
Marina released her first album in 1979, Simple as fireand he already had new collaborations with Cicero, as Loves sex AND Key to the world.
In the book the singer talks about how the relationship between her and her brother changed from the moment they understood each other through music.
“Cicero and I grew closer. With worlds, secrets, conversations of our own. Our meetings to compose were delightful… We were thrilled with every song we made, with every discovery. And, in a way, we had this excuse to stay there for hours, exchanging, inventing and getting to know each other”, writes Marina.
In a statement to the newspaper The globe this Wednesday 23rd, the costume designer Marcelo Pies, widower of Antonio Cicero, declared that Marina became aware of her brother’s decision to resort to assisted suicide last Tuesday 22nd. Cicero, suffering from Alzheimer’s, died in Switzerland, one of the countries where this practice is legalized.
The report of Estadao He approached Marina to see if she would like to talk about Cicero’s death. Her counselor said she is still “very emotional” and needs to “process her grief.”
