In an interview with Contigo!, funk singer and violinist STER comments on her connection to music and her goals in merging the erudite with the popular
After going viral on the web with videos of him playing current hits on his violin, STER launched her singing career and already has two original projects: an album not yet released and the Erudite funkwhich contains three new singles, two of which are already available. In an interview with With you!the artist who shone at Espaço Favela do Rock in Rio explains that he uses funk to keep classical music alive in the new generations: “I didn’t fall behind“, he emphasizes.
Roots in music
STER says that her relationship with music began at birth: with a mother who was a pianist and music teacher, the young woman was encouraged to venture into the artistic world from a very young age. “He always influenced me and my sister a lot, so we grew up involved in music. Whether in church-related events or any type of school event, she has always been very involved with us, ever since we were little.“, he shares.
According to the singer, her mother’s wish was for her to learn to play the piano, but the instrument that finally conquered her was the violin. “I first saw the violin in a Barbie movie and fell in love with the instrument. I said, ‘Mom, this is the instrument I want to learn.’ I was 8 years old“, remember.
Determined, STER combined her violin lessons with learning other instruments, such as the piano, but ended up abandoning the others and dedicating herself exclusively to the one she had chosen: “The violin is a complex instrument and I was very committed to learning it to pursue a career, so when I started playing the violin I left the other instruments aside.“.
Before learning to play the instrument, the young woman was already immersed in the world of the arts and, without realizing it, she transformed into a complete artist. STER participated in choirs, various events and, when accompanying her mother to work, she took dance lessons, which would be essential for the choreography of her music videos in the future.
“I don’t even know how it happened, but I’ve always been very involved in all these areas of art. Whether it’s dance, theater, video… This art of filming, this art of capturing, you know, moments. I learned all this from a young age and now, in my career, I have managed to return to my old habits.“, he comments.
Star on the Internet
STER’s career really took off when one of his videos went viral on TikTok. “It was a video I posted all the time, every week, and I was tired of it never going viral“, he recalls. With the success of the video in which he used the violin to interpret funk, the artist ended up in television programs such as Encounterby Globo, and entered the radar as a new talent in Brazilian music.
Previously, STER had thought about pursuing a career as a violinist and going abroad to study music, but with the good reception of his work, he decided that he should dedicate himself to combining funk with classical and proving that both genres can and should be heard on set.
“Then I went to the Meeting and very, very, very good things happened, but I really didn’t expect it. I was very happy. It was a confirmation that everything had to happen and for me to get to where I am today“, he reflects.
Funk with classic
The singer defines her work as a two-way street for both genres: while erudite music helps combat prejudices about funk, funk revitalizes and popularizes classical music, rarely seen by young people as an option.
“I want, with my music, people to understand that classical music is not what has been left behind. She is not the past. Yes, we can live in a century where things are more dynamic. Now the songs feel different, but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the sound of the instruments“, we read.
The artist says that, in his projects, he tries to give an example of what classical music is, so that people can familiarize themselves and connect with the style. “And at the same time, I bring funk so people understand that it’s not noise. Funk is a very powerful, very strong rhythm“, he says.
“Just like classical music, it can connect us, bring us emotions and feelings, because it is music. I like to combine these two rhythms because I think they are extremely strong and, when combined, they are even stronger“, he emphasizes.
Upcoming projects
Celebrate the release of successes Ring AND SuitedSTER educates the audience about their album and next single Erudite funk. “We are now closing the year, but with all the strength so that 2025 can bring many new things. I can’t give spoilers, but those who were at Rock in Rio saw it, because I also presented it for the first time“, he reveals.
On stage Rock in Riothe artist sang songs from his unreleased album, to which he paid homage Elza Soares interpret the classic Meat and, secretly, also revealed the third song from his hit project.
“All I can say is that it’s amazing and that there is a spoiler in the Encaixa video. So if you want a spoiler on what song it is, watch the Encaixa video and at the end I’ll give you a big spoiler on what’s to come“, he concludes.
