The Latin Grammy is a marketing party that adds little to the actual music scene

The ceremony was long, boring and full of useless numbers, like Anitta’s weak duet with Tiago Iorc

It is not today that the Grandmother lost its ancient importance. If the American edition is already overlooked by many and adds little to the music industry, what can we say about the Latin edition? – nothing more than a marketing fest that is of more interest to a handful of marketing agencies, media sectors and multi-million dollar companies than the actual music scene or the public.

To begin with, it is not possible to take seriously an award capable of separating the Portuguese language from the Spanish language in a context whose purpose is Latin celebration. Such a decision clashes above all with prejudices and sends the message that Brazilian music cannot be recognized compared to Castilian, the dominant language in the region’s market.

Another inexplicable decision is to separate the sexes, with the aim of pleasing everyone. There are categories for Samba/Pagoda, Country, Mexican Music, Christian Music, Urban Interpretation (whatever that means), Salsa, Cumbia, among others.

Just do a simple comparison with Oscarthe most serious and respected artistic award, to understand the scope of the problem. You will never see the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences divide films into comedy, science fiction, horror, mystery, etc. The intention will always be to reward good films, regardless of the label they carry. The same goes for the Tonyat the theater, and the Emmyon television. Quality must be above genre.

Musical attributes, however, are given little consideration at the Latin Grammys. The feeling is that nowadays the number of followers on social media is more important. On the shortlist are artists whose presence is as surprising as finding a penguin in the desert. “How did it get there?” we asked ourselves. It’s a mystery that defies logic.

Finally, we must put an end to the unbridled competitiveness of art. It’s not about sport, where there are winners and losers. In the case of the recognition of notable professionals, we already have the Nobela fundamental award to celebrate humanity’s major achievements. So, who cares about handing out these irrelevant golden trophies?

Not to say that everything is shameful, it is important to underline that, in this edition, the good values of our nation have received well-deserved recognition, such as medallions Erasmo Carlos (Best Portuguese Language Rock Album; posthumous) e Hermeto Pasqual (Best Jazz Album) or the promising ones The Garotini (Best Contemporary Pop Album in Portuguese Language) e Jota.pê (multiple winner in three categories).

Finally, it should be noted that the main ceremony, which ended at dawn in Brazil, was long and boring, full of unnecessary musical numbers, such as the weak duet of Anita with Tiago Iorc in honor of Sergio Mendes (1941-2024).

A rare genuine and pleasant moment of the evening, however, was the hug between them Jon Bon Jovi AND Carlo Viveswhen the American rock star presented the Personality of the Year award to the Colombian singer. Another exciting moment was the Uruguayan’s victory Jorge Drexler in Song of the Year for the simple piece Turn it over.
