“Janjapalooza” fills downtown Rio and receives praise from street vendors

The street vendors celebrate the event, but also highlight communication problems with the organization

A free show Zeca Pagodinho in full Downtown Rio de Janeiro Seems like a good choice for a bank holiday Friday. Street vendors working in Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty Festivalthe “Janjapalooza”, guarantees that it is.

On the second day of the event, which is part of the vast program of G20 In the capital Rio de Janeiro, street vendors celebrate the extra income, thanks to the success of the public that filled the Rio Center, but also highlight the failures in communication with the organization.

Optimism with sales

At 5.30pm the first attraction, located at Maua Square. While the public still timidly arrived at the event, a woman served a line of customers. It was Letícia Rodrigues, 26 years old. The carioca’s profession is trancista, but sometimes she works as a street vendor.

According to her, the turnout was good during the opening night of the event organized by the first lady, Janja. But the street vendor bets that the second day will be full thanks to one attraction in particular: Zeca Pagodinho.

She was asked if she will stop serving customers to enjoy the show Zeca, Letícia responded by dancing and smiling: “I will work and have fun!” Regarding the “premiere” day of the event, he said: “Yesterday it was emptier, but it was nice. But today there is much more to do and I want to sell everything. Until now [por volta das 18h] It’s selling very well, thank God.”

The judgment is different from that of Wanderlei da Silva, 60 years old. According to the street vendor, “it wasn’t even possible to walk” on Thursday. Up until 6pm it still wasn’t as full as Wanderlei expected, but he said he was optimistic: “the tendency is to fill up more, especially with Zeca”.

Even those who are optimistic are optimistic Manuela Abílio Alves30 years. “These types of events help street vendors. It’s always nice to have someone help us with sales. We survive on this,” he says. For her, the first day was even better than the second, even though the program had just started.

“I think it should fill up every day, but yesterday there was a good flood. Seu Jorge was there, right? But the bad thing is that he came in, sang two songs and left,” he criticized. “But I think it’s good, yes, that we can earn money, especially because they gave us the opportunity to work here,” he adds.

Around 6.40 pm the most optimistic predictions came true, at least as far as the public was concerned: the Rio Center was packed with fans awaiting the performance of Zeca Pagodinho.

Accreditation failures

Letícia Rodrigues told it Earth who, despite operating in the sector, needed to obtain special accreditation for G20. “My boss gave me the bracelet, so I could work,” he explains. Despite the bureaucracy, the street vendor was not satisfied with the organization of Thursday 14th, the first day of the Festival.

“Yesterday there were many street vendors who came to work without credentials, interrupting the sales of those who had credentials. Today it is organized, much better,” he celebrates. Thursday night there were the big names Daniela Mercurio and Seu Jorge.

Manuela Abílio also obtained the credential according to the same scheme as Letícia and called the opportunity a privilege. “The Municipality has done so [o acesso] for some street vendors who already work on the streets as street vendors. They selected some people who work here and I had the privilege of working on the event,” he celebrates.

However, on the first day he also criticized the organisation: “Yesterday it was a little more disorganised, today they are more rigid. For us who work here, having to travel all this way to replace the goods is tiring work. And there are street vendors who came to sell yesterday, burning the price to a value that was not appropriate to sell here and this ended up hindering our sales,” he criticizes.

Wanderlei da Silva confessed that he was unable to obtain accreditation, but he set to work. “I registered, but I couldn’t receive [a credencial]. It happened, but I wasn’t left without a job,” he says.
