Son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Sean Taro Ono Lennon revealed how he began a career in music with the aim of “filling the void” caused by the death of his father, a legendary member of the Beatles who marked the history of rock.
Lennon died at the age of 40, on December 8, 1980, in front of the Dakota Buildingin New York, after being shot four times in the back by Mark David Chapman. Brother of Julian Lennon, Sean was born on October 9, 1975 and was just five years old when his father died.
During an interview with Peoplethe son of the formerBeatles shared a personal insight into how the tragedy affected him and how music became an outlet for his creativity. Throughout his career, he released three studio albums, Into The Sun (1998), Friendly Fire (2006) and Asterisms (2024), in addition to producing the soundtrack for films such as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead (2009), Alter Egos (2012) and Marks of Possession (2015).
“I never played music because I was good at it. I lost my father and I didn’t know how to fill that void,” he said. “Learning to play his songs on the guitar was a way to process the loss with an activity that made me feel connected to him.”
When you lose a parent, things like that motivate you – because you’re trying to find them. Making music always made me feel like I was getting to know him better.
