What Leoni says about being sued by Paula Toller

The musician was sued by Kid Abelha’s ex-partner on charges of having used the song “Pintura Íntima” in Fernando Haddad’s campaign

In 2018, Paula Toller sued Leonihis ex-partner Kid Abelhain addition to Fernando Haddad and the direction of the Workers’ Party (PT). The reason was unauthorized use of the song “Intimate Painting” in the campaign of the then presidential candidate.

These are different actions, even though they are associated with the same episode. In the case of the politician and his party, both were ordered to pay compensation, but appealed and in 2024 emerged victorious. As for the situation involving the artist, the case is still pending in court.

In an interview with Valmir Moratelli for LookLeoni commented on the imbroglio. The musician defined the episode as “unpleasant” and pointed out that he was available to resolve it without needing to involve the courts.

“She won the first instance, I appealed, and it is still being processed. I think it’s strange actually, because it wasn’t part of Haddad’s campaign. I recorded ‘Intimate Painting’ to help him, but I posted it on my networks, it wasn’t part of the official campaign. But she sued me and we are still resolving it in court. It was very unpleasant. We could have resolved it personally.”

In the artist’s opinion, there is still a reflection on the work they both created together. Leoni was bassist for Kid Abelha between 1981 and 1986 and assumed the role of main composer during the period.

“Of course, for construction work it’s not so cool, because there’s a certain amount of confusion. It’s weird for partners to sue each other, it could be resolved another way.”

Still in his statement, the musician pointed out:

“But it is strange in general for the class, especially in the election of Lula and Bolsonaroopt for a side more to the right. Because it’s up to artists to imagine new worlds, better worlds, not this thing of wanting to return to a glorious past that didn’t exist.”

Paula Toller and polarization

Also in an interview with Lookmonths before that granted by Leoni, Paula Toller discussed political polarization and said she had been criticized by both spectrums. Although she filed a lawsuit against Fernando Haddad and the PT — in addition to Leoni —, the singer signed in 2022 the Charter in Defense of the Rights of Democracylaunched by University of São Paulo (USP). The document does not name names, but mentions attacks on the electoral system made by then president Jair Bolsonaro.

She stated:

“Yes, I was a victim on both sides. I am in another social geometry. I have friends of all types. I don’t believe in going head to head with people, as if I were part of a cult. I have no political idol. I’m pragmatic. I talk about politics, but not about politicians.”
