“Spotify Unwrapped,” a website critical of the platform, is shut down under threat of lawsuit

Parody encourages streamers to think about the value artists receive from the company

In the wake of Spotify Wrapped, a retrospective of the streaming platform featuring the most listened to artists and songs of the year by each user, a website called Spotify Unwrapped was created.

The name of the parody is a pun on the English words “wrap” and “unwrap”, which can be translated as “wrap” and “unwrap”. The site compared the amount paid by Spotify customers to the royalties the company pays to artists, revealing “its predatory treatment” (via NME).

While Wrapped went live on Wednesday the 4th, the site went offline this Thursday the 5th, after “a request from Spotify’s legal team.”

The link takes you to a website that continues to encourage fans to think about the value they receive from artists. Based on the type of plan and minutes listened to or number of streams, users can calculate how much artists supposedly received per listener.

“Completely independent artists receive approximately 90% of this sum. Artists signed by record companies can receive from 5% to 50%, depending on the contract signed,” the site reads.

The text also mentions the decision of Kate Nash to join OnlyFans: “If possible, support your favorite artists in other ways, such as by purchasing merchandise, watching live shows, or subscribing to their content on OnlyFans.”
