U2’s Larry Mullen Jr. is diagnosed with dyscalculia; understand effects in music


The drummer recently found out about his diagnosis and mentioned his son has dyslexia while speaking on the topic

Larry Mullen Jr.drummer of U2revealed that he had been diagnosed with dyscalculia.

In an interview with Times Radio published last Friday, the 13th, spoke for the first time about the learning disorder that affects skills related to numbers, including music. The musician, for example, compared “counting the beats” of music to “climbing Everest.”

“I’ve always known that there’s something that doesn’t work very well in the way I deal with numbers. I have numerical difficulties,” he reported. “And I recently found out I have dyscalculia, which is a subcategory of dyslexia. So I can’t count, I can’t do math.”

Mullenthen, he explained that the “suffering” expression on his face while playing the drums was visible U2 it is justified precisely by dyscalculia.

During the conversation with the radio, Mullen also released the documentary Left behindwhich tells the story of five mothers responsible for creating the first public school for children with dyslexia in New York.

The drummer produced and composed the film’s soundtrack motivated by his son’s dyslexia diagnosis. Launching in October, the Woodstock Film Festival, Mullen he said: “Creating music through the eyes of my dyslexic son was personal and visceral.”
