List considers data from the United States, the main global music market; of the 200 most sold, less than 30 come from rock
Currently, old rock records are sold more than new ones. It’s no surprise for anyone who follows the lists of the year’s sales leaders, or even the weekly charts, occasionally featuring albums from past decades.
Still, fans less interested in this type of information may be surprised by the survey of the 200 best-selling albums of 2024, carried out by billboard. A filtering carried out by the website Ultimate Classic Rock (via Igor Miranda website) shows that, among the two hundred mentioned, only 26 are rock — and none of these works are recent.
The most sold rock album this year, in fact, was released in 1977. It is Rumorsthe multiplatinum eleventh studio album by Fleetwood Mac. With lyrics that portray relationship endings within the band itself, the record had more than 40 million units sold across the planet over the decades.
Numbers of copies sold for 2024 were not reported. Still, Rumors It is ranked 34th in the top 200 overall, covering all genres. An expressive position, even more so because it is such an old material.
The popularity of Rumorsin fact, was renewed recently with the success of the series Daisy Jones and the Sixavailable on Amazon Prime Video. Inspired by the book of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reidthe production narrates the rise and end of a band in which members have an emotional relationship and fight with each other. A plot very similar to the real story experienced by Fleetwood Mac in the mid-1970s.
The second, third and fourth placed in the rock ranking are compilations. Diamonds (Elton John35th on the overall list), Chronicle: Their 20 Greatest Hits (Creedence Clearwater Revival40th on the general list) and Greatest Hits (queen47th on the general list) are, respectively, the holders of the mentioned positions. In fifth place (93rd on the overall list) is Nevermindclassic of Nirvana and a portrait of early 1990s alternative rock.
In addition to Rumors and Nevermindthere are only three other rock albums in the top 200 that are not compilations. These are Back in Black of AC/DC (17th on the rock list and 162nd on the general list), Hybrid Theory of LinkinPark (20th on the rock list and 180th on the general list) and the album of the same name by Sublime (25th on the rock list and 197th on the general list). Otherwise, only compilations.
