MusicTeimosia: MK and Edgar seek to rescue the essence of classic rap in EPOs. The two artists launched the collaborative project at the beginning of December, in addition to a music video for the title track today at 1:00 p.m.

The two artists released the collaborative project in early December, as well as a music video for the title track.

The rapper Edgar and the producer Mk joined forces on a project titled Stubbornness (2024). The EP, which features rap flirting with jazz, is the result of a meeting between the two artists that took place through a mutual friend, the businessman Renato Marquesin July. “The idea of doing a stop together came up and I already sent him some instrumentals,” recalls the beatmaker in conversation with Rolling Stone Brazil.

Everything happened quickly — and unpretentiously, as the rapper highlights — which resulted in a boombap research, without so much drums present and which dialogues with what Edgar has been doing for some time. The project, launched by Central Records also included the production of Rico Manzano and Dani Mariano in mastering and mixing, signed alongside Pedro Quiriku.

They reveal that the initial name of the project would be Teimosia Jazz, largely due to the samples, which play with the musical genre. “It wasn’t intentional,” he says. Although the final product has five tracks, MK shared around 13 betas with his partner and they don’t rule out that the project could eventually be expanded into an album.

What is stubbornness?

If for some, stubborn is someone who throws a tantrum, Edgar and MK understand that what best describes the word is “subversion” and “civil disobedience.” “It’s fun not giving up, the stubbornness of not giving up,” he explains MK.

The Anti-Christmas of Stubbornness

Released in December, with a Santa Claus on the cover and starring in the video for the title track, which features the singer’s vocals Janvi. We could be talking about the most classic Christmas records — if this weren’t a subversive work. In Stubbornness, the good old man is not welcomed with milk and cookies. He is approached by the police and seen as unwanted.

“I was doing image research because I also have a job with visual arts,” he says Edgar. “And this is a real image, we appropriate this image in the language of our friends, like Brime does with this football language, we tried to do it thinking about how subversive it would be for Santa Claus taking a picture.”

The initial idea for the cover would feature the two artists reinterpreting Reservoir Dogs (1992), from Quentin Tarantino. “Me and the MK pointing guns at each other,” explains the rapper. The plan fell through when another artist released an album with the film’s cover. “It was through the cover – and because it was the end of the year – that the idea for the clip came about,” he adds MK.

The clip, starring the rapper Lummember of the Fifth Floor and the Natural Order. “A personality, a niche face in the rap scene of the 1990s and 2000s,” he reflects Edgar. “And when we put him in this precarious Santa Claus position, it’s a semiotic criticism that ends up happening naturally.”

To bring the vision the duo wanted, they had the partnership of João D. MoraisDemobuda. “It raised the audiovisual level that we hadn’t yet prepared,” he says MK. The only requirement was that the clip be in black and white and reflect the aesthetics of silent cinema.

The duo did not consider making other videos for the EP, but each track had its own viewer with takes from the clip. All are available on YouTube.

Edgar has already used the track “Teimosia” in his shows, but the two have not yet performed exclusively for the project – which is not out of the question. If the project extends to an album, something even more elaborate could emerge. We’re rooting for that.
