Basementthen reflected: “Live music is a ritual that awakens a common emotional response to which we link our individual experiences. When I’m on stage, I get to see these unique and particular feelings reflected in each face. That’s one of the great privileges of being a vocalist, and that’s why I spend so much time in front of an audience. I love watching the emotions on people’s faces — joy, sadness, desire, laughter, fear, anger.”
“The show becomes powerfully and empathetically reciprocal as we experience the therapeutic nature of music together. As the show unfolds, a movement of exchange and kindness emerges, driven by our mutual respect, and healing begins,” he continued.

“A live show can overwhelm you, even seem frightening, because its emotional power can suddenly bring out the deepest experiences in us. But feelings are there to be felt — that’s what they’re for,” he pointed out. Basement. “We heal by acknowledging our emotions and we test our heart’s resilience by staying with what feels unbearable.”
Music can help us in this process. We discovered that our hearts are much stronger than we imagined and that what we thought was unbearable was actually not. Music evokes these subterranean feelings and, at the same time, rescues us from them.

The artist completed his response by saying: “I’m glad you went to the show in Birmingham, Stellanbut I think it was a missed opportunity to ‘get out early’ from a feeling before it ran its course and fulfilled its reparative role. I understand that it must be painful to feel like these ‘amazing moments’ are in the past, but they aren’t — there are many more to come. There will also be new disappointments, but hearts will break stronger.”
“We shouldn’t turn away from our feelings. We need to confront them. Practice them. Get better at them. To paraphrase Samuel Beckett — suffer, suffer again, suffer better. That’s something live music allows us to do — suffer and heal at the same time,” he added, before advising the fan:
My advice? Go back there. Live to the fullest — and stay until the end of the damn show. It’s incredible.
