Augusto Licks reported tense moments after the vehicle skidded and collided with a wall due to oil on the road
Incident and musician’s report
Augusto Licks, former member of the band Engenheiros do Hawaii, suffered a serious car accident on BR-116, in Curitiba, earlier this week. The 68-year-old guitarist was accompanied by his wife, Marcia Jakubiak, and daughter, Laura Jakubiak Licks. According to him, the car skidded while passing through an oil stain on the road.
“We were very lucky, it could have been fatal. The bandits poured oil on the BR-116 with the aim of overturning the trucks and stealing the cargo. The car slid until it hit a side wall, turned over and ended up across the street,” Licks told Estadão. He emphasized that he used the vehicle’s high beams and interior lights to warn other drivers and avoid collisions. “Luckily no one hit us, I managed to start the car and take it to a nearby petrol station,” he added.
Injuries and recovery
The musician reported feeling a pain that he thought was temporary, but a tomography showed a fracture and a depression of the sternum. “I thought the pain was temporary, I used anesthetic patches, but it got worse and the CT scan showed a fracture,” he explained.
Licks said he will remain in Curitiba until the end of the month to recover and wait for the vehicle to be repaired. “I’m going to calm down here in Curitiba, hoping to be able to go back. Luckily my wife and daughter were not injured,” he said.
Career at Engenheiros do Hawaii
Augusto Licks was part of the best-known lineup of Engenheiros do Hawaii, led by bassist and singer Humberto Gessinger, and which also included drummer Carlos Maltz. The trio gained prominence with hits like “Infinita Highway” and “O Papa é Pop”, becoming one of the biggest names in national rock in the ’80s and ’90s.
Recently Licks and Maltz returned to play together, accompanied by the band Os Engenheiros sem Crea.
