The singer and composer was hospitalized due to health complications and leaves a legacy of more than four decades of career in Bahian music

Legacy in music and remarkable trajectory

Carlos Pitta, singer and composer who revealed Ivete Sangalo at the age of 17, died this Tuesday (7/1) in Salvador, at the age of 67. Diabetic, he was admitted to the Roberto Santos hospital, where his death was registered.

With more than 15 albums recorded, Pitta has built a long career and has had his songs performed by names such as Elba Ramalho, Alcione and Margareth Menezes. He has also shared the stage with renowned artists such as Caetano Veloso, Dominguinhos, Geraldo Azevedo, Belchior, Nando Cordel, Fagner and Ivete Sangalo.

Recognized as an icon of Northeastern music, Pitta was responsible for the creation of “forrock”, a style that combined elements of forró and rock. With this innovation he projected Feira de Santana and Bahian culture onto national and international stages. Among his best-known compositions are “Cometa Mambembe”, “Todos os Caminhos Levam a Feira de Santana” and “Abrigo Predileto”.

The discovery of Ivete Sangalo

In July 2023, Ivete Sangalo recalled, during his participation in the podcast “Mano a Mano”, presented by Mano Brown, that it was Carlos Pitta who noticed his talent when he was still a teenager. The singer pointed out that Pitta also lent her an electric guitar so she could start her career performing in bars in Salvador.

Tributes and official note

The Department of Culture of Bahia (Secult) released a note lamenting the artist’s death. “It is with immense sadness that the governor of Bahia, Jerônimo Rodrigues, and the minister of Culture, Bruno Monteiro, express their feelings of regret and solidarity with the family and friends of the singer and composer Carlos Pitta, who passed away this Tuesday (7 / 1).”

The statement highlights Pitta’s cultural impact, recalling his words about his trajectory: “He rode the wheel of the world and ended up in Feira de Santana.”
