Peter Yarrow died this Tuesday morning, aged 7. He was one of the founders of the folk trio Peter, Paul and Marywhich marked a generation and helped make it popular Bob Dylan. Four years ago he was battling bladder cancer.
The death was confirmed by his daughter Bethany. “Our fearless dragon is tired and has entered the last chapter of his magnificent life. The world knows the iconic activist Peter Yarrow, but the human behind the legend is as generous, creative, passionate, playful and wise as the his lyrics,” he said.
In the 1960s, a period strongly marked by the Vietnam War and the civil rights struggles in the United States, the trio Peter, Paul and Mary had success presenting songs that spoke about these themes to the public.
One of these songs is Blowing in the wind, by Dylan, released in June 1963. The trio sang the song alongside Martin Luther King Jr. during the historic March on Washington in August 1963.
Yarrow is one of the song’s composers Puff the magic dragonwhich reached the Billboard charts in 1963.
Yarrow began singing while still a student at Cornell University. He was performing in New York when he was discovered by businessman Albert Grossman, who invested in the singer’s career.
In recent years Yarrow has dedicated himself to an NGO, Operation Respect, which runs an anti-bullying program in more than 22,000 schools in 50 countries.
Mary Travers, who was a trio with Peter and Paul, died in 2009. Noel Paul Stookey is still alive, aged 87.
