The businessman also explained why his festival attractions tend to repeat themselves: “it’s not just up to me, but up to the music industry”
Hip hop, trap, funk and even country music were featured in the most recent editions of the Rock in Rio – which, despite its name, has never been an exclusive rock festival. However, there is a popular genre that has never been taken into consideration: K-pop, a derivation of pop music produced in South Korea.
Is this an exclusion? Second Roberto MedinaNO. In an interview with Braulio Lorentz for g1the entrepreneur declared that the doors of the event, which he created in 1985, remain open.
“I have no problem having a K-pop band at Rock in Rio. There were no coinciding dates with big bands like blackpinkbut we are open to this possibility.”
Medina says the festival’s interest in bringing certain attractions isn’t enough. Artists and/or their managers must also want to come.
“The dates have not yet been agreed and we need the band’s intention to come to Brazil. It does not just depend on the wishes of the festival. The choice of attractions is not only mine, but is based on research and what the public wants Then, for each day, we try to divide it by age group and musical style, but we don’t always manage to do it as we would like.”
Repeat attractions at Rock in Rio
Another point raised during the interview by Roberto Medina involves the repetition of attractions in the Rock in Rio in its latest editions. It is rare, in particular, for the event organization to bring in new headliners. The businessman emphasizes that this is just a mirror of the music industry.
“I believe it’s an issue that doesn’t just concern me, but the music industry. It needs to create bands that can satisfy this desire for renewal, because if you analyze shows of this nature and scope, it’s difficult for an event to renew its training.”
Also in his speech, Medina underlines the difference between the scenarios of 1985 and the current ones. He points out:
“In 1985, when Rock in Rio started, it was very easy. Nobody had come to Brazil and it was like that for a while… Today there is a great demand for the same bands. I don’t know what the problem is that today there ‘it’s less renewal, but that’s okay, like I said, you will always have a section of people who criticize you and I’m not entirely used to that.
Finally, the businessman highlights one attraction at the latest Rock in Rio that earned him criticism when it was announced, but generated huge demand for tickets: Travis Scott. He recalls:
“Travis Scott was my personal choice, because I was curious to see him, but for Rock in Rio it was very different. Then I went to Twitter and there it was: Roberto Medina in the trending topics. I was so proud. I said: ‘Wow , how beautiful’. Then I went to see it and: ‘Wow, everyone talks badly about me!’ I turned it off right away, I didn’t want to see anything else. I said to my wife, ‘Wow, people hate me.’ But then it got crowded and it was too much.”
The City 2025
Scheduled for 2026, the next edition of Rock in Rio does not have a precise date. Already the The cityproduced by the same creators of the Rio festival, it will take place on 6, 7, 12, 13 and 14 September, at the Autódromo de Interlagos, in Sao Paulo.
