Institution in the Netherlands has a teaching staff made up of musicians from well-known bands and seeks to train professionals in different areas of heavy music

There are those who say that heavy metal is not something that can be taught. The college Summa Collegein Eindhoven, Netherlands, disagrees.

The educational institution has attracted attention in the international press with its new initiative: heavy metal courses. THE “Metal Factory”the name given to its faculty dedicated to the project, focuses on transmitting knowledge so that each aspiring musician can master different instruments, but in the way that the heavy-sounding public expects.

It is possible to learn to sing and play guitar, bass, drums and keyboard, always focusing on heavy music. In terms of vocals, we even teach how to do gutturals, a technique typical of more extreme subgenres where lower sounds are produced by exploring the pharynx.

The “Metal Factory” website (via Metal Hammer) highlights that the intention is to train “independent artists and entrepreneurs in the music industry”. It is part of the scope to develop professionals in areas such as performers, composers, producers and music teachers. The institution also highlights that there are former students moving on to areas such as copyright, music therapy and speech therapy.

Heavy metal course teachers

There are famous metal names on the faculty. Among the teachers are Robin Zielhorst (former bassist of Cynic), Bart Hennephof (guitarist of Textures), Stef Broks (drummer of Textures) and Merel Bexhtold (former guitarist of Delain). About them, the institution states:

“Our teachers are all active in the music industry, on stage and behind the scenes. We try to keep our education up to date and relevant to today’s industry. We believe it is important that our teaching team reflects this philosophy. Many of our teachers have toured the world and are therefore able to share realistic experiences and knowledge with our students.”

A report from the Australian channel 7 Newsin particular, generated repercussions by showing a little about how the courses work. See below.
