Two of the greatest bands in rock history had a series of similarities, but one difference was crucial to their legacy
THE LED ZEPPELIN Shortly before the end of Beatles and their trajectories keep some similarities. Both groups revolutionized rock in different ways, had enormous commercial success, marked a specific era, and ended, after approximately 10 years of activities, precisely at a decade.
However, there was something very different between the two bands. And it has nothing to do with the music.
The director Bernard MacMahon and the writer Allison McGourtyfrom the new documentary Becoming Led Zeppelinthey observed in an interview with Billboard the distinctions in the promotional tactics of both groups. While the Beatles exhaustively appeared in the media, the Zeppelin He adopted an opposite strategy – which even almost damaged the film developed by the filmmaker duo.
Mcmahoninitially said:
“You Beatles They made an insane amount of advertising apparitions all the time. So there is an infinite supply of photo shoot and TV interviews [para montar um documentário]. With the Zeppelin It was exactly the opposite. There is so little. ”

The decision to release very few media appearances came from Peter Grant. Known for his “hard line” approach, the entrepreneur of Zeppelin He believed that being absent from TV, not releasing singles and making the most of bootlegs production (unofficial recordings of the shows) would keep an aura around the band, fostering the sale of tickets and albums – as these would be the only ways to listen them. McGourty commented:
“ PeterGrant He took someone filming the show, he would tear off the movie, break the camera, and expel his own, physically, the person responsible. Also, they did not appear in the press, in the media. We have all the fragments of filming of which you are aware. ”
Still according to Allisonthe development of Becoming Led Zeppelin – that hits Brazilian theaters in Imax on February 27 – became “much more difficult” due to the absence of filming. The writer states:
“This forced us to be creative. We are very inspired by golden age movies, as Singing in the rain, [diretor] Frank Capra. We use many old movie techniques, such as assembly work. You see newspapers, contracts, tickets – we had over 6,000 digitized artifacts. Everything you see in the movie is real. ”

The guarantee of a good job
Bernard MacMahon and Allison McGourty They sweated the shirt with the team, but it was worth it. In the end, they were validated that they did a good job with Becoming Led Zeppelin From the opinion of two people who closely followed the band. Macmahon score:
“We show you to Bob Weir and Taj mahalwhich were the kings of counterculture in the bay area. They were there when the Zeppelin Break out. Weir It was to me at the end of the movie and said, ‘You know, this is something that changes the game, every child should watch to see what their grandparents did and how they did. Do you know what I was thinking while watching these guys? They reminded me of the trio of John Coltrane with a singer. Or Pharoah Sanders with a singer ‘. This from Bob Weir. This shows the level of musicality he is seeing. ”
The compliment of Taj mahal proved even more enthusiastic. The legendary musician told filmmakers:
“This movie reorganized my molecules.”
Macmahonthen, concluded:
“A guy who has known this band for 55 years had his opinion expanded and changed his preconceived ideas about them.”
