The group with three of the original nine members remains dehydrated but standing, challenging the centralizing or bipartite systems of the history of the genre
More than a major Brazilian rock group, Titãs is a 40-year-old structural phenomenon with no similar references to any other rock group organization on the planet. Nine members were bold when trio and quartets were on the rise (in fact, that was never different): Paralamas do Sucesso, RPM, Legião Urbana, Engenheiros do Hawaii, Ultraje a Rigor, Camisa de Vênus, Ira !, Plebe Rude . National rock reproduced the electrified reduction system of what was once a vast big band. Gradually, the acoustic bass left this reduction to enter the electric one and the piano was replaced by two guitars, rhythmic and solo, to return, some time later, reincarnated in the form of a keyboard.
But the Titans there were nine creative creatures, nine collaborators, nine guys ready to take on any side project. What other group was like that? Rock was strengthened with centralized structures and leadership, preferably messianic. Renato Russo, the greatest around here, went to show the other side of this coin. A group anchored to a central figure of such strength will immediately die out as soon as it loses its leader. Without Nasi there would be no Ira !; without Marcelo Nova, there would be no Shirt of Venus; without Humberto Gessinger, engineers would not be feasible. But without Arnaldo Antunes, without Marcelo Fromer, without Nando Reis, without Paulo Miklos and without Carlo Gavin, the Titans continue to throb. Not as before, just like Ira !, with the original Nasi and Scandurra, they too do not pulsate as before, but continue to pulsate.
When they decided not to corporatize the brand, that is, not to fill the vacancies opened by the evasion of talents with substitutes who were not good players, the Titãs were dehydrated but did not distance themselves from themselves. And normalcy, as history shows, is not this: Whitesnake, after a hell of back and forth, had 64 members; the Iron Butterfly, also 64; Guns N ‘Roses, 23; and the Fleetwood Mac, 18. A mad need for the stage and money that often made them look disfigured. But rock admits bipartite realms, as long as the functions are well defined. Mick Jagger has 1, Keith Richards has 2; Axl Rose on 1, Slash, on 2. Bon Jovi, on 1: Richie Sambora, until his departure in 2013, on 2. Cazuza was on 1, and what saved the Red Baron from the end with the his departure was the fact that having a competent 2 like 1. Frejat took over and improved the wing, but never had a 2, and what happened to Barão after his departure, despite the efforts of a substitute, it was something towards the end. The decentralized life of the Titans even felt like a party, but it was survival.
