If you are in any way a fan of Star Wars I Indiana Jones franchise, you can thank Lawrence Kasdan for much of their respective success. Lawrence Kasdan helped start the adventures of Indiana Jones as in search of the lost arkscreenwriter, while he was a Star Wars world, she was responsible for the editing of The empire strikes again after Leigh Brackett’s death, and will work on three others Star Wars movie later. As for Kasdan’s work on those early 1980s films, Kasdan recalled with CinemaBled some key tips from George Lucas, who created both the Star Wars Yes Indiana Jones franchise, gave him time to develop some sequences in his head.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Lawrence Kasdan about Light and Industrial Magic (ILM) his six-part docuseries that tell the story of the visual effects company Industrial light and magic, which Disney + subscribers can now stream. Visual effects have come a long way since those early years in Star Wars Yes Indiana Jones sagas, and as such, I asked Kasdan if these technological limitations were on his mind when he was writing sequences that would need a lot of effects. He replied:
Yes, not at all. I had no limits in my head, and I’ll tell you why. Because my boss was George Lucas, and George Lucas said, ‘Don’t worry about all this. Don’t worry about how we’re going to do it. Don’t worry about how much it costs. We will worry about it. What do you think would be best to see here? And my hero, my favorite director is Akira Kurosawa. When I was writing, I was like, ‘What’s the best thing that can happen next?’ And I think this is the spirit that George brought to cinema, and it is the spirit that ILM brought to life for 50 years, 40 years. What can we do again? Often these wonderful directors didn’t know exactly what they wanted. They knew where they wanted to go and ILM had a huge impact on what we see today, where they perfected it, where there was something in the script or a director told them: “Can you do it? And they found an even better solution than what the director expected.
As Lawrence Kasdan said, George Lucas urged him not to hold back when it came to creating heavy effects sequences for films such as in search of the lost ark Yes The empire strikes again. The sky could be the limit for Kasdan, and once his work was done, Lucas was content to figure out how to bring those sequences to life with the people who worked at the ILM and other members of those film crews. As Kasdan said, he admires Lucas for wanting to do what he could in those early years, which later paved the way for ILM to make great strides in the advancement of visual effects and other areas of cinema.
So George Lucas’ advice to Lawrence Kasdan not to let the limits of effects dictate what he wants to bring to the big screen has paid off, because I’m not alone. The empire strikes again Yes in search of the lost ark Among the most beloved voices in their respective franchises, they are also considered to be movie classics.
