Tracy Chapman gave his first interview in years this Friday, 4, and spoke about the resurgence of “Fast car” thanks to a cover version of Luke Combs. The artist reflected on her performance of the song alongside Combs on the Grammy 2024 and revealed what it was like to hear one of his main hits in a country rereading.
“It was amazing, a very exciting moment for several reasons. Luke is a lovely person, “he said Chapman to the New York Times. “Before we decided to do that, we had a good conversation and we were in the same tune on how to conduct the presentation. That’s where it all started.”
The artist said she was “crying” when she arrived at the rehearsal space accompanied by the musicians who were with her many years earlier – her last tour was in 2009. Chapman stated that it was her idea to bring together the original band again: the guitarist Joe Gore, David Kershenbaum (which produced the debut album of Chapman), Larry Klein downstairs, Denny Fongheiser on battery and Larry Campbell on the violin.
It’s my team. I had some guys with whom I worked over the years, for sound and light, and everyone appeared. So it was really something very exciting. All those people appeared to the Grammyand I’m very grateful for that. I did everything I could to prepare for performance. ”
Chapman He said he could feel the reaction of the public, but he tried not to be distracted by people in the audience. “But I realized. I think part of it was fun too!” explained. “The crazy thing about events like this is what you plan and plan and plan – it took a long time to put it all together – and then it ends in a moment. And soon after, you have no idea what you did. But I knew we could make a great presentation.”
Reflecting on the version of Luke Combs From the song, Chapman said he had never dreamed that “Fast car” would become a country song, but it seemed a complete cycle for her – the track even won the award of Song of the Year in the country award CMA Awards2023.
“Because I started playing the guitar when I was very young, and I think the reason I wanted to play the guitar was because I saw ‘Hee Haw’ [programa de televisão com música country]. My mother really loved it, and I loved the guitars, the sound, the appearance, “she said.” But I think what is doing this connection is that ‘FAST CAR’ It is a narrative song, and this is the basis of a lot of music of the genre. Personally, I never pay much attention to the genre. I do not consider it relevant or interesting to separate things only by their style. ”
It is a pleasant surprise that the song has found this new home. I would not have predicted that I would go this way, but the music has been rewritten enough and there are dancing versions of it. I can’t say I would have thought about it too. “
The interview with Chapman It occurred while she promoted a vinyl edition of her homonymous debut album, which completes 37 release ANS. She said it was “surreal” to revisit the LP and that it took her back to the studio with Kershenbaumwho produced the disc. “I didn’t allow myself to have many moments of nostalgia,” he said.
In the interview, the singer also admitted that although she still listens to music, she prefers physical editions instead of streaming. “I still hear music. I don’t listen as much as I used to and maybe now I will compromise or someone will call me Ludista [movimento criado por trabalhadores ingleses no século XIX notável pela destruição de máquinas como forma de protesto]But I don’t hear music on streaming, “she said.” I only buy music in physical format. Artists receive when you really buy a CD or vinyl. This is important to me. So, to some extent, it limits what I hear, because it is a physical commitment to go out the world and find things, but I still go shopping. “
