Several albums of the band entered the rock classic gallery at all times, but one of them is seen as “a powerful time capsule”
Few bands in the history of rock built a catalog as powerful as the LED ZEPPELIN. There are nine albums released and most of them can receive the definition of “classic” without much discussion.
However, in the opinion of the guitarist and producer Jimmy Pageone of these works wins the adjective “perfect”. This is the unlucky album of 1971, also known as LED ZEPPELIN IV. Responsible for presenting songs as “Black Dog”, “Rock and Roll” and the historic “Stairway to Heaven”the material had more than 37 million copies sold worldwide.
In 2014 interview with The Quietus (via Far Out), Page revealed to understand that, in LED ZEPPELIN IVeverything fitted. The chemistry between him, Robert Plant (voice), John Paul Jones (low) and John Bonham (battery) had reached a new level after three albums.
“It was very clear to me at the time. The fourth album shows, in a perfect way, everything that has to do with the band; be the individual performances, the collective functioning, the production and everything that has to do with it.”
Following, Page pointed out that IV proves to be “very different” from previous records: LED ZEPPELIN (1969), LED ZEPPELIN II (1969) and LED ZEPPELIN III (1970). He stated:
“It’s a truly powerful time capsule; that’s what it is, and it’s very different from previous albums.”

In the same year, Guitar worldJimmy reflected that the freedom granted by the label, Atlantic Records, was fundamental to the birth of IV and Houses of the Holy (1973), next album. The band’s agreement with the seal involved total creative autonomy and veto to the launch of singles.
“Interestingly, if we had been forced by the label to do singles, we would never have been able to try how we did, or record albums like IV or Houses of the Holy. As we created each album as an independent production, we could actually determine that there would be no singles. And when you look at the whole catalog, my God, you realize that it was a blessing not having to submit to commercial radios. ”
The guitarist added:
“Our attitude with the label was: ‘Here’s the album, and if you want to give something to the radios, that’s fine, but don’t waste time asking us to release something similar.”
LED ZEPPELIN UP TO TITLE ALBUM
Although it is commonly called LED ZEPPELIN IVLed Zeppelin’s fourth album has no title. The band’s name also does not appear on the cover. It seems bullshit these days, but at the time Jimmy Page was even advised not to do that, otherwise he was committing “professional suicide.”
And what led the guitarist to release the album this way? “It turns out we had a lot of faith in what we were doing”he clarifies.
