Coachella has always been known as one of the hottest festivals in the world, synonymous with youth, fashion, trends and, of course, music. Taken every year in California, the event attracts multitudes of young people in search of unforgettable experiences, new artists and the most shareable moments on social networks. But the 2025 edition brought a curious episode that raised discussions on the musical memory of the new generations.
During the show by Benson Boone – one of the most famous pop artists among today’s young people – a special participation surprised those: Brian May, a legendary queen guitarist, climbed on stage for a performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody” together with the singer. Despite the undeniable talent of May and the historical importance for World Rock, the audience’s reaction was at least disconcerting. Much of the audience did not seem to recognize the British musician, keeping a cold and confused posture during the show.
The episode became viral on social networks, with many Netizen expressing surprise (and even indignation) with the ignorance of the public. For some, the moment symbolizes an increasingly pronounced generational disconnection, in which the icons of the past are forgotten in the speed of digital culture and the immediate consumption of viral blows. For others, the presence of Brian May in Coachella also reveals the efforts of the festival’s artists and curators to try to bring different generations closer through music, even if the result is not always expected.
Regardless of the reception, the moment with May and Boone has entered the history of the festival as a shock of the eras – and a reminder that in events mostly transformed to young people, not even a legend of rock is immune to anonymous passengers of the digital era.
