Ayrton Senna’s sculpture attracted the attention of the fans waiting for the arrival of the American singer

It is a sculpture by Ayrton Senna, three times Formula 1 world champion (1988, 1990 and 1991) and a historic Brazilian sports idol. The statue of the former driver, who died in an accident during a race in Imola, Italy, in 1994, is a few meters from the stage where Lady Gaga will excite the fans on the margins of Rio Beach, in front of the Copacabana Palace Hotel.

The work is by the artist and sculptor Mario Pitanguy and was inaugurated in 2019. Pitanguy interpreted Senna of real dimensions, wearing a suit. The idol is in the highest step of the podium, celebrates a victory and brandishing the Brazilian flag.

Senna is considered one of the greatest Brazilian sportsmen of all time, known and idolized all over the world. Overall, the Brazilian pilot participated in 161 Formula 1 races, reaching 41 wins, 80 podiums, 65 pole positions and 19 faster laps. So, many tourists, Brazilians or not, who pass through the edge of Copacabana interact with the game.

Mário Pitanguy is also responsible for the elaboration of other statues of sports names. It is his sculpture by Roberto Dinnamite, Idol of Vasco, located at the San Januário stadium, as well as the work with Zico, Flamengo’s Idol, which is located in the Quintino district, in the north area, where the former player grew.
