Still parading class and vocal power at the age of 73, musician made a final presentation of his long -term tour celebrating Deep Purple

Glenn Hughes It is one of those artists worthy of the appeal “brings the CPF”. Since his first trip to Brazil in 1998, the legendary English musician has always included the country on his route. No wonder it reaches its tenth first visit, as one of the main attractions of the Paulistano festival Bangers Open Air On Friday, 2, with date to return: in November, holds a sequence of performances in Porto Alegre (11/11), Belo Horizonte (13/11), Rio de Janeiro (14/11), again in São Paulo (16/11) and Curitiba (18/11).

And there is reason for the audience to follow, which justifies the series of returns: Hughes gives a real show in front of the microphone. Even at the top of its 73 years, it still sings a lot. It retains a surprising range and does not lose your breath or the concentration even careful in the groove of your bass. Challenges his own age and the logic of human aging.

The strength of the repertoire of a guy who has already integrated Deep Purple, Trapeze and Black Sabbath and is still part of Black Country Communion It is indisputable and collaborates a lot for the show. Still, it would be no use if your performance had no satisfactory quality.

Friday’s show, 2, closing the first of the three days of Bangers Open Air at the Latin America Memorial, kind of marking the beginning of a new phase. Glenn is in shorter and less extravagant hair than adopted in recent years, when he revised a very specific period of his career: Deep Purple’s times, when, between 1973 and 1976, he made history with albums Burn, Stormbringer and Start tasta the band. This period has been honored by English for almost a decade, but now he wants to celebrate more phases and especially release a solo album, allegedly already recorded and expected for some time this year.

It is surprising, therefore, that its tour in November was disclosed as a farewell. He did not even commented on the topic – the announcement was made only by the local producer. An artist who still has firewood to burn and even enters a “new phase” at this point in the championship does not seem willing to retire.

Throughout her 80 -minute set, Hughes makes it clear that at least she doesn’t sound like she’s “end of career.” It is already noted soon in the first moments of “Stormbringer”music that names the second of their albums with Purple: If the treble still take a while to come, the artist demonstrates rare breath with the stretched phrases. At least in front of the stage, his bass sounded louder even than the guitar of Søren Andersenthat, together with Ash Sheehan (battery) and Fridzema (keyboards), make up a powerful power trio.

Of the three, Sheehan is the one who escapes the most to reproduce tones and lines of the original recordings and gives his own face, either through the open cash tone or the extra weight in execution. Only hesitates when, probably under Hughes’s order, “Sail Away”third of the set, at a considerably slower pace than the one known to the public. Conventional speed, however, returns in “You Fool No One”executed in an elongated format to the point of having guitar and battery soils, a not so improvised blues and an excerpt from “High Ball Shooter”.

The audience is really excited “Mistreated” and “Burn”. In the first mentioned, Quinta do Setlist, Glenn capriche in the treble without losing the melancholy of the original composition, interpreted only by David Coverdale. Already in the second, eighth and last of the repertoire, makes the audience divide between singing in full lungs and playing air drums while listening to one of the most iconic drum lines in the history of heavy rock.

If there is a way to complain about something, perhaps the show did not seem prepared to end a festival – eight songs distributed in 80 minutes and several instrumental extensions to wisely spare the voice of the main attraction. But it is very little to get the brightness out of a technically formidable and somewhat historical presentation, as it is known if Glenn Hughes will revisit his Deep Purple repertoire with the size of the last eight years.

Other highlights of the 1st day of Bangers Open Air

Organization

When it was still called Summer Breeze Brasil, there were some minor problems in the public experience to be solved by the organizers. Virtually all of them seemed resolved in the third edition of the festival today named Bangers Open Air. Namely:

  • The “Front Row” area, a kind of premium mini track, is more comfortable: besides being expanded, the space has gained an exit on the left that made a lot of missing in the other editions;
  • There are turnstiles and entry/exit controlled by QR Code, which gives more dynamism and security to public traffic in the Latin America memorial;
  • Also more comfortable, the section for the purchase of Merchandise is now inside the Simón Bolívar Auditorium – where Waves Stage shows have returned, dismissing the reduced external stage that did not work so well in edition 2024.

To regret, just the unattended sound of some shows. During the Armored Saintfor example, the voice of John Bush – Problem that was repeated in Pretty Maids At least on the premium track “Front Row”, as on the common track Ronnie Atkins microphone sounded much better.

Doro

No wonder Doro Pesch It has the nickname “Metal Queen”. The German, who developed a long -term solo career after the end of the Warlock Still in the 1980s, he offered in his show everything expected of good Heavy Metal performance: vocals at the right point, presence of surrounding stage, sharp instrumental (under clear command of the talented Brazilian guitarist guitarist Bill Hudson) and repertoire without low points and touched virtually whole under high speed (the only ballad, “Für Immer”it is indispensable).

There are classics scattered throughout the set, although the ending with “Breaking the Law” (Cover of Judas Priest Starting slowly and then gaining weight) and “All We Are”. Very charismatic, Doro extended Brazilian flag, risked words in Portuguese and continued to sing even when the pre-recorded closing music, “Living after Midnight” (Judas Priest), began to touch the speakers – over the voice of the metal God, we heard “Metal Queen”.

Pretty Maids

The destination could have prevented this that was the first show of Pretty MaidsDane Band founded in 1981, in Brazil. The vocalist Ronnie Atkins It was diagnosed with terminal internship lung cancer between 2019 and 2020. How is this man, now 60, is alive and singing? No one knows. To the website Where rock happenshe says the tumor follows there. “He has not completely disappeared, just under control […]so I learned to live with it ”it says.

Ronnie Atkins, from Pretty Maids, at Bangers Open Air 2025

It’s amazing not only that Atkins is alive, but fans have had the opportunity to check out the energetic performance offered by him, Ken Hammer (guitar), Chris Laney (keyboard/guitar), Allan Tschicaja (battery) and René Shades (low). With repertoire strongly based on albums Future World (1987) and Pandemonium (2010), the quintet presented the audience with its sound more inclined to Heavy Metal than to hard rock, but with melodic great enough to establish proximity to the second subgenre mentioned. Songs like “Kingmaker”, “Little Drops of Heaven” and “Love Games” They are a delight to hear. In addition to Ronnie’s still whole voice, the right tone of the six Hammer strings must be highlighted and especially the power that is TschiCaja with drumsticks and pedals under the feet – touches a lot.
