Interview with Roy Khan (Conception, Ex-Kamelot)
About the idea of celebrating the 20 years of The Black Halo With a show with Edu Falaschi in São Paulo:
Roy Khan: “Last year, I made a participation in an Edu Falaschi concert at Tokio Marine Hall. We talked about the albums that are completing birthday and I mentioned that The Black Halo I would turn 20 in 2025. So we talked about doing the same thing again, but with me singing more songs than last time. And will have an orchestra. We will not play the album in full, because I am invited and we will have other attractions, so we had to limit something like 40 minutes, about seven or eight songs. But it will be great to play these songs that represent such an important era of my career. ”
About sharing the stage with Maestrick, a Brazilian band who will accompany him at the show and with whom he has worked in the studio:
RK: “I met Fábio Caldeira and the Maestrick faces on the same show. He mentioned that they were working on an album and that they had a song in which they were thinking of asking me to make some vocals. A few months later, they wondered if I wanted to record ‘lunar vortex’, great music. A few days to do the clip, I accepted. ”

About friendship with Edu Falaschi and his opinion about the work of the Brazilian:
RK: “We have known each other for years and talked from time to time at festivals and special occasions. But we approached when Edu invited me to last year’s show in Sao Paulo. Edu is an amazing guy. I just don’t know his material very much, because I don’t know a lot of bands from my genre. ‘Heroes of Sand’ and some others. And, of course, Angra was also recording with the Soup [Paeth] and the Myrus In Wolfsburg at the time I also started working with them. I know the band, the style and everything, but I don’t know the songs in detail. ”
About the possibility of continuing to do shows celebrating his legacy at Kamelot:
RK: “At the moment, we only have this show and one more in Denmark [nota: outros compromissos no Japão foram confirmados após a entrevista]. Then I will see what kind of offers will arrive and we will see. But it’s definitely something I would like to do. I’m dying to play these songs from that period again, not only because I love them, but because this period is very important to my career. I remember in 2011, when I left Kamelot, many people had just discovered the band and had never seen me live. ”
What Roy Khan thinks The Black Halo These days:
RK: “I think it’s great, it stands out as a wonderful work of art, both musically and literally. I see this album as a chance of luck, of many people and different talents being in tune and playing at the height of their abilities. It was the first time we worked with Simone Simonsvocalist of Epica. Shagrathfrom Dimmu borgirit’s there too. And it was also the first album we made for the SPV label. For the first time, we had enough budget to do everything we had in mind. […] We felt we had something in progress that was the best we had ever done. Popularity increased and creatively also felt that we improved. Still, we had no idea that it would be the classic that really became. ”
The health problem that affected Roy Khan during the sessions of The Black Halo:
RK: “We created a lot of the album in Norway. I remember that one of the composition sessions happened in my basement. We used to compose in Florida, Germany, Norway. Sometimes we just met somewhere, we rented a place and wrote. But I remember that there was an strange eye disease, or an autoimmune disease, that made my immune system attack my visual nerves. To be hospitalized for about four months and then I still had to stay in Norway to do control and vision exams for a few months.
About the decision to leave Kamelot in 2011 due to mental health issues, such as burnout and depression:
RK: “Mental health is important not only in music, but for people in general, especially young people. This demands attention and care. When being in a band, especially on the front line, like the main figure … This puts a lot of pressure on you. You have to be with your mind in the right place and have the right movements to navigate such an environment. I think awareness has increased in recent years, but it is important to keep discussing about.”
Learning during the full break in the musical career, between 2011 and 2017:
RK: “It was really a need for me to just get out of that scene. I was physically sick just thinking about going to the airport. I was fed up with all this thing. At first, I couldn’t even hear music on TV. After a while, things came back to my mind and I slowly understood that, even if all this was affected at that time, I still wanted to work with music and sing. your life in that environment. ”
