Music serious disease that almost took us Tony Iommi in the last decade

Black Sabbath guitarist fought – and won the battle – against a tumor discovered in 2012; Four years later, he announced the remission

If today Tony Iommi is about to do a big and apotheotic farewell show with the Black Sabbathmuch is due to science and the doctors who treated it in the past decade.

The guitarist, considered the father of heavy metal, fought and won the battle against cancer discovered in 2012. Four years later, he announced the remission of the tumor.

The battle was not simple at all. Iommi was diagnosed with lymphomaa type of cancer that develops in the lymphatic system, affecting lymphocytes, body defense cells.

It all started when the guitarist was promoting his biography, Iron Man (2011), and preparing for the recordings of Sabbath’s last studio album, 13 (2013).

At the time, he told Guitar world (via Blabberouth):

“I consulted a doctor because a lump appeared in my groin. We thought it was just a swollen ganglion, so he prescribed me antibiotics. After the tour (from the book), I was going to Los Angeles to start the rehearsals. He said that if the lump didn’t disappear in two weeks, when I got there, I should consult another doctor. Antibiotics, because I had developed an infection because of another problem in the prostate.

Since lymphoma was still at an early stage, the musician underwent treatment that was a success, although he left him quite weakened. Fortunately, he was considered healed by doctors in 2016.

Tony Iommi updates health

Nevertheless, in 2023 Tony Iommi updated his health in an interview with the journalist Eddie Trunk (via Blabberouth) and revealed that it goes through “ups and downs”. And not necessarily as a result of old cancer, but due to its age.

At the time, he was 75 years old; Today, there is 77:

“I’m on ups and downs. I’m going to do my tests. It’s like anyone elderly (laughs) – you have problems. But no, in general, it has been very good. Certainly, as with cancer, it has been – I dare – good. I have other problems, such as hand and feet and things like that. Good – keep you motivated;
