Isn’t MusicCazuza not seen as LGBT+icon? Experts reflect

Artist follows alive in the popular imagination of Brazilian music, but acting supposedly shy as a militant generates debate

Even after 35 years of his death from AIDS complications, on July 7, 1990, Cazuza follows alive and present in the imagination of music in Brazil. Constantly, the rock poet, as it became known, is the subject of events, exhibitions, audiovisual taxes and rewrites by other artists.

However, his performance as a gay man in the field of militancy in favor of directly to the LGBTQIAPN+ generates debates. Had no Cazuza been able to rise like an icon of the movement?

According to the anthropologist Luiz Mottin a statement cited in an article by DWthe singer and songwriter had shy performance regarding homosexuality and never raised the flag of the cause. Mott, who is a retired teacher at Federal University of Bahia (UFBA)argue:

“I like Cazuza as a composer and singer, but I disagree with him for his mutism and for not speaking anything explicitly about homosexuality and gay movement. In the background he was an egodistonic and selfish gay. He did not realize the crucial role of supporting militancy.”

Gisele Jordãocoordinator of the course of Cinema and Audiovisual of the School of Advertising and Marketing (ESPM), disagree. She defends the thesis that Cazuza did, yes, a preponderant role on the theme:

“The impact of its public stance is undeniable. Cazuza lived his bisexuality naturally and without hiding in a period of huge prejudice.

The specialist in cultural projects adds that the musician, original vocalist of the Red baronalso contributes to AIDS awareness:

“He not only talked about his condition, but used his vast visibility to break the silence around disease. In that context, the mere existence of someone like him, young, famous, talented, living with HIV and shameless who was, in itself, a potent political act.”
