James Gunn’s new film mixes original orchestra with indie pop pearls, fictitious punk and even obscure Iggy Pop collaboration with Teddybears
With official debut in theaters this Friday (11), the new Superman marks the kick -kick of the cinematic universe of A.D commanded by James Gunn. Starring David Corenswet in the main role and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lanethe feature features a new version of the hero, now trying to balance their alien origins with their life on earth.
While the script revolves around the moral and identity dilemmas of the Supermanthe soundtrack offers moments that surprise by unconventional choice, especially for a superhero blockbuster. The original score is signed by John Murphy (28 Days Later, Kick-ass) and David Fleming (The Last of Us, Mr. & Mrs. Smith), but are the Needle Drops – Those licensed songs that come at punctual moments – that draw attention.
Among them, the film includes the delicate and solar “Bring Me Sunshine”from the British Sophie Madeleineand the indie-folk hit “5 Years Time”from the band Noah and the Whalelaunched in 2007 and still remembered by its crossing gum and nostalgic lyrics. Amid the scenes, there is also mention of a fictitious punk band, THE MIGHY CRABJOYSan easter egg that refers to the animated series Creature Commandosalso created by Gunn.
But the most unexpected moment of the trail comes in the final credits, when “Punkroocker”a collaboration of Iggy Pop with the Swedish group Teddybears. The track first appeared on the album Rock ‘N’ Roll Highschoool (2000), still without the vocals of the punk icon, and was only officially relaunched with Iggy In 2006, on the album Soft Machine.
