American band singer is honest in commenting on what moved the last releases and why he decided to set up parallel project
THE Strokes did not end activities, but has not launched anything unprecedented since The New Abnormal (2020), performed only one show in 2024 – none this year – and seems to be living on autopilot. As indicated by Julian Casablancashe and his companions follow the band by pure obligation.
The vocalist himself, currently 46, admits that today his interests are different, far from the type of music that the group, coming from New Yorkis able to offer your fans.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Italy (via NME), Julian was sincere and showed little appreciation for what Strokes became:
“When I started making music, falling in love with my dreams and sight, I had a very clear idea of how I wanted things to evolve. My journey with Strokes became something different from what initially attracted me to music.”
According to him, the big problem is that the band has been remained together just because of the money:
“We had come into a mechanism that kept us together for financial reasons, leaving the band’s creativity in the background. So I came to the conclusion that this was not the way I wanted to develop.”
Julian Casablancas Beyond Strokes
Since 2013, Julian Casablancas has been in parallel project The Voidzwhich has already released two albums: Tyranny (2014) and Virtue (2018). The initiative seems to receive greater affection and dedication from the singer.
In the interview, the musician explained why he decided to create another band, parallel to Strokes.
“There is a beautiful quote from Miles Davis: ‘The real risk is not changing’. That’s why I always want to feel that I’m looking for something unexplored. If I make money, that’s fine, but I don’t want to stand still. I am not looking for security or status quo. If anyone wants to keep creating, they need to be ready for change. Even if it means the death of something expensive to you. “
