Curious Music Bronca do Dry & Wet in Ney Matogrosso who marked the beginning of the end

Singer recalls an episode in which João Ricardo and Gerson Conrad took a hard time and tried to “censor” their stage performance

THE Dry & Wet It lasted three years from 1971 to 1974 at the height of the military dictatorship. As an affront band, especially by the figure of Ney Matogrossoinevitably it was necessary to deal with repression.

Only she didn’t always come from outside. There was a specific episode in which censorship departed from inside the group – and Ney was the target.

Still in the beginning, in 1972, Ney was already drawing attention for the way of dance, painting and provoking on stage. He was gaining like a rising star, but for the other two members, João Ricardo and GERSON CONRADthe spotlight attracted by the singer were not at all positive. Especially because they threw light on the trio’s sexuality.

One night, João and Gerson, accompanied by the businessman MORACY DO VALcalled Ney to a meeting and gave an ultimatum: he would have to give up makeup and extravagant dance, because the Dry & Wet It was starting to be considered a band “gay”.

Ney remembered this episode in a recent interview with the program Conversation with Bialfrom the Rede Globotranscribed by Rolling Stone Brazil:

“They called me for dinner in a restaurant in São Paulo And then I was told that I could no longer paint and dance as I danced because they were saying that we were a group of homosexuals. “

He added, revealing what his answer was and making it clear that he did not bow his colleagues:

“I said, ‘But this is very simple to solve, guys. Say you are not.’ If I stop doing that (dance and paint), I will go out and do something else. Because that was what I knew and what I wanted to do.”

From then on, however, the relationship between Ney and, especially, João Ricardo began to sour. About a year later, in early 1974, it would be all over between them.

The Drop of Water for Ney Matogrosso

The drop of water was the entry of João ApolináioJoão Ricardo’s father, in the circuit. In Ney’s assessment, both plotted to get the Val businessman Moracy to take the Apolinario to take the management of Dry & Wet.

To the podcast Chat with clê (via Igor Miranda website), Ney said:

“I decided I was going to leave the band when we went to Mexico And our manager (Moracy do Val) did not appear there because he had changed, João Ricardo’s father had become our manager in place of our manager and I went against it. Immediately I went against it. Then I was told, ‘You signed for him to leave.’ I said, ‘I signed for him to leave? I don’t want him to go out, how did I signed for him to leave? ‘ Because they gave me some papers to sign to the office to continue working. Only I thought Moracy went with us. When I arrived at the airport that Moracy didn’t show up, I started to be suspicious. “

Break of Dry & Wet

The group’s second album, namedly or also known as Dry & Wet II (1974), was launched with the imminent end. Despite having great songs, such as “Astral Flowers”, “No: don’t say anything”, “Oh! Unfaithful woman” and “Flight”the album did not have the same repercussion of the debut and practically fell into ostracism while Ney Matogrosso decided to leave, resulting in the end of the group and in solo careers of those involved.

With other formations, Dry & Wet existed between 1977 and 1980, 1988, 1999 to 2000 and from 2011 until 2012. Launched seven albums without Ney. The biggest hit in the absence of the singer, “What end did all flowers take?”integrated the album Dry & Wet III (1978).

In turn, Matogrosso started a long -lived solo career with the album Sky Water – Bird (1975), which did not obtain the expected repercussion. Commercial success returned with Bandit (1976). Dozens of records have been released since then – the most recent, Naked with my musicarrived in 2021, occasion of the 80th anniversary of the artist.
