Musica New function of Spotify that would allow him to compete with WhatsApp

Although ambitious, a tool announced by the musical streaming platform should be just complementary – and use of other networks remains recommended

THE Spotify announced the arrival of a new functionality: the sending of messages. In theory, the audio streaming platform (music, podcasts and audioolivros) can even compete with social networks and text applications, such as WhatsApp. In practice, however, it must be something only complementary.

According to a statement published by the company, the users themselves asked the introduction of the appeal. The idea is to facilitate the sharing of music and other audio products with friends and family.

Messages will be available to free and premium users 16 years or older, from this week, in selected markets, on mobile devices. The countries were not revealed.

See how messages work, according to Spotify:

  • Share Spotify content and start a message in the app with people you have already interacted with Spotify.
  • Listening to a music, podcast or audiobook on the “in playing” tab, tap the sharing icon, select a friend and click Submit.
  • After accepting a message request, you can react with emojis, send text messages, and share Spotify content easily. Visit “Messages” by accessing your profile photo in the upper left corner.

The public will also see suggestions from people to send messages based on factors such as if you have shared Spotify content with them, if you participated in jams, blends or collaborative playlists, or if you share a family or duo plan.

As stated, however, no real competition with WhatsApp. Spotify himself made it clear, in a note, that the function is only complementary.

“As always, you should continue to share Spotify content directly through your favorite platforms, such as Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Tiktok and others. Spotify messages are designed to complement these integrations, not to replace them.”

“Users in command”

Also according to the note released, users will always be in charge of Spotify messages. Internet users have the option of accepting or rejecting other people’s messages. It will also be possible to report if inappropriate content is shared.
