About the Brazil/United Kingdom Cultural Day

Until June 2026, the season promotes more than 100 projects that cover artistic homes, performances, exhibitions, film exhibitions, academic conferences and social and environmental impact actions. The program takes place in all five regions of Brazil and the UK, with free or public entrances, and has as their thematic axes, climate emergency, diversity, representativeness and joy as collective strength.

The initiative is the result of a partnership between British Council, the International Organization of the United Kingdom for Cultural Relations and Educational Opportunities, and the Guimarães Rosa Institute (IGR), an organ of Itamaraty responsible for Brazilian cultural diplomacy. Together, the institutions designed a program that seeks not only to foster creative exchange, but also to build long -term partnerships between artists, cultural leaders and institutions, leaving a legacy in both countries.

The British Council CEO, Scott McDonaldwill be in Brazil for the launch and comments on the significant dimension of the Brazil Cultural Year/United Kingdom: “It is a program that combines the creative energy of two diverse and vibrant nations, strengthening ties of friendship and lasting collaboration. I’m sure this season will be remembered as a milestone in our intercultural dialogue and an example of how art and creativity can inspire concrete answers to the challenges of our time”.

Culture has the unique power of connecting people, creating shared meanings, and generating new perspectives on the great themes of our time. The cultural year is a stimulus to the spirit of collaboration and possibilities that the United Kingdom and Brazil share. It is at the same time a celebration of what is already unite and a platform for what we will still build together. Our release event, which combines British cinema with Brazilian sound, is an emblem of this philosophy in action”, Tom BirtwistleDirector of British Council in Brazil.

The director of the Guimarães Rosa Institute (IGR), ambassador Marco Nakatapoints out that “The Brazil/UK Cultural Year was carefully planned to portray the cultural proximity of our two peoples and, at the same time, to highlight the particularities of Brazilian and British societies, with the aim of promoting greater integration through the knowledge of the other’s culture“.

To encourage cultural exchange and expand the geographical scope of the program, British Council and IGR made in 2024 an international public call, inviting Brazilian and British institutions to present joint projects. One of the main selection criteria was the focus on bilateral collaboration, with each initiative involving at least one organization of each country. Ten proposals were selected with strong impact potential and already consolidated in their respective areas.

Partners involved include renowned institutions such as British Museum, British Film Institute, Science Museum, Tomorrow Museum, Amazon Museum, Sesc São Paulo, Julie’s Bicycle, Art and Research Pivot and the Mapping Amazon Festival, among others.
