25 years ago event horizonThe theatrical release was technically a box office bomb. The film would eventually have a healthy home video life by becoming a cult classic that eventually spawned a dedicated fandom. Unfortunately, this second life would lead to bittersweet reflection, as 25 years later, star Sam Neill has pondered what still bothers him about the film’s final form.
I had the great honor of speaking with Neill during the theatrical promotion of domination of the Jurassic world , and it was a conversation that produced surprising results. One of the most exciting was the actor’s response to whether or not he was going to be in Paul WS Anderson’s film. hypothetical “Snyder Cut” for event horizon . Sam Neill revealed to Gossipify that not only was he thrilled to be involved in such a venture, but that it all had to do with his disappointment in the state the film was released in 1997:
I think it would be cool to do that, because actually when I saw it … I thought that by doing it, we were making a really good science fiction movie. This really scary horror / sci-fi movie. It was a little bit disappointing for me when it came out because it broke off so quickly and all the suspense was gone. What’s on the other side of this dark corridor? What is hiding there? It was all over, and it was shot very carefully. I would have thought that if it had been a longer film and had those cliffhangers with care and attention, I think it would have been a much stronger film. … It bothers me too, really.
Though fans want to see what a longer version of Paul WS Anderson’s film could have been, Sam Neill shares the same desire. Hearing him talk about alternate shooting on some of the finest moments in the finished film made me even more excited to see a slightly redone version of event horizon Nor has time diminished this desire, because it is one of the Fans of the directorial cuts argued long before Snyder cut Justice League.
While the story of event horizon The post-production issues aren’t as gruesome as Zack Snyder’s epic battle, it’s still considered to be of legendary proportions. Forced to an earlier release date in an effort to get a successful summer release first the already controversial Titanic , Paul WS Anderson’s film was overshadowed. Anderson accepted a faster overhaul in the editing room, and the hacked version was released worldwide on August 15, 1997.
It wasn’t until the DVD’s release event horizon that someone had thought of restoring Anderson’s sight, and it was too late now. Years in a Transylvanian salt mine degraded the cut footage, with only two extended sequences and a deleted Sam Neill scene recovered. One of the extended sequences gave another event horizon cast member, something exciting to talk about from time to time, as Jason Isaacs once told the story of how he was not allowed to keep his fake corpse gutted manufacturing
25 years later, event horizon it is now receiving a 4K UHD reissue from Paramount, which follows a revamped Blu-ray from Shout Factory. Furthermore, a television adaptation of the film has been in development on Amazon since 2019 . There is still a lot of love for this film, and with Sam Neill on board to re-shoot / re-age Dr. Weir, hopefully maybe a little more oomph will be added to resurrect this haunted film. ship once again.
Meanwhile, Sam Neill fans needn’t worry! You can see the legendary actor in the extended edition of domination of the Jurassic world, which will be available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday.
