Fleetwood Mac legends participate in the Song Exploder podcast to discuss the album “Buckingham Nicks” and Stevie Nicks confirms rapprochement: “It seems like yesterday”
It seems that the “frozen love” has thawed. Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham participated in the podcast Song Exploder to discuss the creation of the track “Frozen Love”and everything indicates that the legendary duo, known for their tumultuous relationship, are back on speaking terms.
The exes and former bandmates reflected on the song, released on the album Buckingham Nicks (recently re-released), in interviews that appear to have been recorded separately. However, Nicks admits on his part that the two are friendly again. When remembering the moment they met in 1966, in high school, Nicks he said: “lindsey and I started talking about this last night. This all seems like yesterday to us.”
They describe their origin story, when Nicks joined Buckingham in Fritz band. They found success opening for Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplinbut the producer Keith Olsen said they would be more successful as a duo. “Keith was very supportive of us, but Fritz never got a recording contract”it says Buckinghamwhile Nicks adds that the situation was “terrifying” for them. “We loved these guys”she said. “So we weren’t happy about it… It was our first super disappointment in the music world.” But, she added, it was bittersweet: “It was an invitation to greatness, and we both knew it.”
Nicks says she and Buckingham they probably wouldn’t have dated if they hadn’t left Fritz. “It brought us together… And then we fell in love with each other, and that was it.”
They devoted themselves to writing Buckingham Nicks and reflected on the creation of the final track, “Frozen Love”. “The song is about two people who were in love, who had many differences… but they had this relationship that felt like a gift”he said Nicks. “I like to think of it as Wuthering Heights or Great Expectations — a modern love affair, tragedies. Because nobody really loves happy songs. I certainly didn’t love it, and neither did the lindsey.”
“Our relationship was full of ups and downs… difficult, but at the same time, fantastic”continued Nicks. “And what we were doing was so fantastic, it was worth enduring the trials and tribulations of a difficult relationship.”
Nicks also joked that the verse “Hate gave you me for a lover” (THE hatred gave me to you as a lover) was not intentional, and it was originally “Fate gave you me for a lover” (THE destination gave me to you as a lover). “When I hear myself sing that verse, it feels like I’m saying ‘hate’ [Hate]”she said. “Then this is not good. I’m sorry, lindsey. I’ll call him later.”
The album Buckingham Nicks It was a sales failure at the time, but it was, famously, the duo’s entry into the Fleetwood Mac. The episode of Song Exploder ends with Buckingham remembering the moment he was in the Sound City studio and heard “Frozen Love” playing loud. “I open the door… I see this tall guy [Mick Fleetwood]…and Keith [Olsen, o produtor] says, ‘Oh, lindseythis is Mick Fleetwood.’”
Last fall, Nicks told Rolling Stone that the last time he spoke to Buckingham was briefly, at the celebration of Buckingham’s life Christine McVie. “I dealt with lindsey as much as I could. You can’t say I didn’t give him more than 300 million chances.”
Fortunately, with the album’s 50th anniversary Rumors approaching 2027, it looks like a reunion could be in the air.
