The largest volume concerns plastic items, followed by cardboard
Over 14.5 tons of recyclable material were collected City of the rock Friday 2, the first of the seven days of Rock in Rio. All the material – plastic glasses and packaging, cardboard, aluminum cans and glass jars and bottles – has been sent to collector cooperatives and will be sold to industry for recycling.
The largest volume concerns plastic items, followed by cardboard. According to a survey by the startup Reutiliza Já, employees of the Municipal Urban Cleaning Company (Comlurb) collected 7,409 kilograms of plastic and 5,444 kilograms of cardboard. In addition, 1,361 kilos of aluminum and 378 kilos of glass were removed.
Throughout Rock in Rio, the collected material will be brought to the Rio de Janeiro cooperatives that are part of the National Association of Collectors of Recyclable Materials (Ancat) and monitored by Reutiliza Já. “Comlurb collects the material and delivers it to the cooperative, which does all the separation by quality and type of material. Subsequently, they are brought to the industry”, explained the president of Ancat, Roberto Rocha.
From the cooperative, the material will be sold directly to the industry. “There are no intermediaries, which guarantees a better income and quality of life for collectors,” says Rocha.
According to Humberto Bahia, CEO of Reutiliza Já, the whole process is being monitored. In this way it is possible to have data on the quantity of packages collected, on the type and on their destination – and this from the arrival to the cooperatives until the return to the sector. According to the startup’s calculations, the volume of recyclable waste collected on the first day was enough to avoid the felling of 160 trees and to save the equivalent of 242 water tanks.
