Besides Demi Lovato in Brazil: 5 all-female bands to check out

In 1933, four young Americans created a rock band to play at a school event. Years later, with seven albums already released, Brett Anderson, Allison Robertson, Maya Ford and Torry Castellano – which was later replaced by Amy Cesari – saw the band The Donnas take over the international scene.

Mixing punk, metal and classic rock references in their songs, the girl group rose to fame in the 2000s — they were even one of the main attractions at Chicago’s Lollapalooza in 2003. After years of success, however, the band disbanded in 2012, even amid rumors of recordings for an eighth album.


The Veronicas

With three studio albums, the Australian band The Veronicas is made up of twin sisters Jessica and Lisa Origliasso — who have already made it pretty clear that they don’t want to “be a pop duo with two girls singing about relationships.” “We have everything a rock band would have, so we are a band,” the sisters stated.

Inspired by bands like AC DCthe twins created the group in mid-2004, when they were 20 years old, and decided that the group name would be The Veronicas based on the character of Winona Ryder in the movie Heathers (1988).
