Rock In Rio: we tasted the Tasca da Esquina duck rice, in the gourmet space of the festival

Very presentable, the dish may not satisfy the most voracious appetites.

After seven days of Rock in Rio snacking – the ones to queue and the price are justified only by being a little smaller than the size of hunger – I decided to look for a “food experience”, like the organizers of the event, in Piazza del Buongustaio. The space, installed in an air-conditioned pavilion at the entrance to Cidade do Rock, hosts restaurant stands with trendy chefs. The choice was for Tasca da Esquina, the chef Vittorio Sobral.

At Rock in Rio, Tasca da Esquina won an “SP” next to the name to clarify where it came from. She offers five dishes: roast beef (R $ 50), duck rice (R $ 60), cod à braz (R $ 65), bifana (R $ 65) and alheira (R $ 65). I opted for the rice, which in addition to the chickpeas and duck meat, comes with garlic, onion, bacon, egg yolk, and beef chorizo.

The dish took about ten minutes to prepare – while I waited, two roast beef that was ordered after my dish was delivered. The rice arrived hot and very presentable in a disposable bowl.

And yes, it is very good. It’s tasty, the rice is fluffy, the duck is very present, the two slices of chorizo have a noticeable flavor, and the topping felt just right.

I’m not sure, though, if I can use the expression “worth every bite”. Because the portion is small, and if it’s tough enough to support a reporter’s hunger, it probably won’t support that of someone walking through the gates of the City of Rock at 2pm willing to spend the next ten years shaking in front of the different stages.

This perhaps explains the almost non-existence of queues in front of the Tasca da Esquina SP in Piazza del Gourmet. Undoubtedly, the food is often tastier and more enjoyable than a combination of that fast food burger that costs just five reais less. But the problem lies precisely in the paradox: while the hamburgão, eaten in a hurry between one show and another or in line to use one of the Rock in Rio toys, gives the (false) feeling of satiety, the duck rice makes you want to eat another one.
