Susana Baca and her Peruvian Africa enchant Sesc Pompeia

It is by revealing the magic of her country, and not by singing Brazilians, that Susana shines like the great diva of her country.

the Peruvian singer Susana Baca this Sunday, 16, his last show in the country, as an attraction of the Jazz section. It will be 6:00 pm, in the dining room of the Sesc Pompeia (much better, in this case, than the theater) and the tickets are very difficult, but it is worth the last minute fight (a friend who can no longer see, a retreat there, anything) . Susanna she played her first show on Saturday, in the same dining room, and, at 78 and with her small, welcoming voice, the sweet Afro-Peruvian has validated every line of those who know her most deeply.

Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to open with the generosity of singing Brazilian songs. Alongside two Brazilians, guitarist Carlinhos Antunes, an old friend, and accordionist Gabriel Levi, sang brasilidades, but, for example, was not very comfortable with the division of Star, by Gilberto Gil. An almost tense moment on a song that is more demanding than it seems, but that the public understood as affection. Her show would begin when there were just her and her Peruvian ensemble, with two percussionists, guitarist, acoustic bass, singers and a pianist. Unlike other corners of Latin America, Susana’s Peru has a song with a very diluted beat that is difficult to set – a rhythm called landó. Her charm, even percussive, is in the air, not on the ground, unlike Cubans, Colombians and Brazilians. It is another Africa.

Susana sang songs like black hamhistorical in your voice, stagger, Maria Lando, Sorngo and, twice, Chanteruriafrom another Peruvian, Great Chabuca, in one of the most mantric moments of the night. For those who can’t be at the shows, there’s a new album that’s worth every note. urgent words is exceptional, nominated for a Latin Grammy 2022 for best folk record, with The Herida Oscura (The dark wound); Negra of the Almawith its particular rhythm, near and so far; Pink color, by Pedro Polito and Antonio Polito; And Milonga de Mis Amoreswith its Cuban beginnings that, in reality, it is an Argentine tango by Pedro Laurenz, from the 1930s. The album was recorded in Cañete, a small “pueblo” which is 150 kilometers from the capital, Lima, where Susana lives between trees, flowers and birds with her husband Ricardo.
